orphan date July 2010 Kevlar KM2 is a synthetic para aramid fibre produced by DuPont . The fiber is an evolution of the original Kevlar fibre. The following quotes summarise Kevlar KM2 s properties. DuPont created Kevlar KM2 to achieve the performance goals defined by casualty reduction testing for the department of defense. Today it is used extensively for fragmentation protection in the U.S. military . Helmets and vests made with Kevlar KM2 provide enhanced bullet and fragmentation resistance while remaining comfortable and breathable in the most inhospitable climates. Excellent thermal stability at temperature extremes, water repellency , chemical stability and resistance to petroleum products have made Kevlar KM2 an indispensable asset to the military personnel who use it every day. ref http www2.dupont.com Kevlar en US products life protection kevlar km2.html ref Kevlar KM2 fiber is a transversely isotropic material. Its tensile stress strain response in the axial direction is linear and elastic until failure. However, the overall deformation in the transverse directions is nonlinear and nonelastic, although it can be treated linearly and elastically in infinitesimal strain range. For a linear, elastic, and transversely isotropic material, five material constants are needed to describe its stress strain response. In this paper, stress strain behavior obtained from experiments on a single Kevlar KM2 fiber are presented and discussed. The effects of loading rate and the influence of axial loading on transverse and transverse loading on axial stress strain responses are also discussed. ref Mechanical Properties of Kevlar KM2 Single Fibre, J. Cleanup date September 2009 Materials with high tensile strength s with negligible elongation properties are reinforced with woven or nonwoven fabrics. The fibres used for making the fabric are of high tenacity like Jute , Glass Fibre , Kevlar , Polypropylene , Polyamides Nylon etc. The weaving of the fabric is done either in a coil fashion or in a layer fashion. Molten materials, ceramic clays, plastics or cement concrete are deposited on the base fabric in such a way that the inner fabric is completely wrapped with the concrete or plastic. As a result of this sort of structure the resultant concrete becomes flexible from inner side along with high strength provided by the outer materials. Various nonwoven structures also get priority to form the base structure. Special types of weaving machines are used to form spiral fabrics and layer fabrics are generally nonwoven. Instead of using metal cage inside a concrete this technique uses a fabric cage inside the same. Uses of textile reinforced materials, concretes are extensively increasing in modern days in combination with materials science and textile technology. for the firearm Remington Nylon 66 Nylon 6 6 , also referred to as nylon 6,6 , is a type of nylon . Nylon comes in many types, and the two most common for textile and plastics industries are nylon 6 and nylon 6,6. Composition Nylon 6,6 is made of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid , which give nylon 6,6 a total of 12 carbon atoms in each repeating unit, and its name. Physical properties Nylon 6,6 has a melting point of 265 C, high for a synthetic fiber, though not a match for polyesters or aramids such as Kevlar . ref Dupont. http www2.dupont.com Kevlar en US assets downloads KEVLAR Technical Guide.pdf Kevlar technical guide accessed 2008 07 10 ref This fact makes it resistant to heat and friction and enables it to withstand heatsetting for twist retention. Its long molecular chain results in more sites for hydrogen bonds, creating chemical springs , making it very resilient. It has a dense structure with small, evenly spaced pores. This means that nylon 6,6 is difficult to dye, but once dyed it has superior colorfastness and is less susceptible to fading from sunlight and ozone and to yellowing from nitrous oxide. Manufacturing of Nylon 6 6 Hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid are combined with water in a reactor. This produces nylon salt. The nylon salt is then sent to an evaporator where excess water is removed. The nylon salt goes into a reaction vessel where a continuous polymerization process takes place. This chemical process makes molten nylon 6,6. The molten nylon 6,6 undergoes a spinning process, where the nylon 6,6 is extruded and sent through a spinneret, which is a small metal plate with fine holes. The nylon is then air cooled to form filaments. mergefrom Second Chance Body Armor Company date May 2009 Second Chance is a bulletproof vest body armor manufacturing company and was the first one to use kevlar for body armor. The company was founded in the early 1970s by former United States Marine Corps U.S. Marine and pizza delivery owner driver Richard Davis. Davis developed the idea of a bulletproof vest after shooting three armed robbers during a delivery out of self defense. This incident was later documented in a 1995 book written by firearms instructor Massad Ayoob called The Ayoob Files The Book . Davis started his company out of his garage. In early sales demonstrations, he would put on one of his vests and then shoot himself, usually with a firearm provided by whatever agency he was demonstrating for. In 1998 , Second Chance introduced Zylon based body armor bullet resistant vests , as a lightweight alternative to kevlar. The Zylon material used in the vests was supplied by Japan based Toyobo. In June 2005, the National Institute of Justice , the United States government agency responsible for developing safety standards, determined that these Zylon based vests did not meet the required standards and may be defective. The United States Department of Justice advised law enforcement agencies to replace the vests used by police officers. On August 2, 2005, Second Chance was acquired by Armor Holdings, Inc. for United States dollar US 45 million . Further reading Massad Ayoob Ayoob, Massad 1995 . The Ayoob Files The Book .
