  1. PLUM keyboard

The PLUM keyboard is computer keyboard which varies from the traditional QWERTY keyboard in both physical key layout and letter arrangement. Unlike most keyboards, the PLUM keyboard organizes keys in a square grid, as opposed to the staggered rows of a typewriter. Though the Plum Keyboard is currently off line, it is still being promoted. Also, the purpose of the product is to teach non typists how to type and not to encourage Qwerty users to switch. The ergonomic advantages are secondary to the incredibly short learning curve. New typists learning Qwerty can typically expect a 4 to 6 week learning curve, whereas new typists learning Plum can touch type within two weeks. This is possible because Plum incoporates mnemonics to assist the learner. READONTHIS is not only easily remembered, they are the ten most frequently used keys and make up the home row where the fingers rest, thus minimizing finger movement. The Plum layout also gives equal time to each hand. With Qwerty, the left hand does 70 of the work, while the right hand does only 30 . It is notable that the Enter key has moved to a half length spacebar position alongside the spacebar itself. Each is now used by one thumb alone left for Enter and right for Space . Also, the Tab and Backspace keys are conveniently and centrally located within the array of letters. 1. Keyboard buffer

Unreferenced date December 2009 A keyboard buffer is a section of computer computer storage memory used to hold keystrokes before they are processed. Computer keyboard Keyboard buffers have long been used in command line interface command line processing. As a user enters a command, they see it Echo computing echoed on their computer display terminal and can edit it before it is processed by the computer. In time sharing systems, the location of the buffer depends on whether communications is full Duplex telecommunications duplex or half duplex. In full duplex systems, keystrokes are transmitted one by one. As the main computer receives each keystroke, it ordinarily appends the character which it represents to the end of the keyboard buffer. The exception is control character s, such as delete or backspace which correct typing mistakes by deleting the character at the end of the buffer. In half duplex systems, keystrokes are echoed locally on a computer terminal . The user can see the command line on his terminal and edit it before it is transmitted to the main computer. Thus the buffer is local. On some systems, by pressing too many keys at once, the keyboard buffer overflows and will emit a beep from the computer s internal speaker. 1. Overlay keyboard

An overlay keyboard is a specialized Computer keyboard keyboard with no pre set keys. Each key can be programmed with a wide range of different functions. Overlay keyboards are often used as a quick and easy way to input items with just two buttons. Overlay keyboards generally consist of a flat grid of unmarked buttons. After the keyboard is programmed, a sheet, called an overlay, is placed overtop to identify each key. The overlay can consist of any combination of words, symbols, or even pictures. Advantages Overlay keyboards have several advantages over Computer keyboard conventional keyboards or Mouse computing mice . They do not require memorization of shortcut keys i.e. F5, Alt S, etc. nor do they require a great deal of fine motor control, making them ideal for people who have difficulty using a conventional keyboard. Overlay keyboards are easy to clean, and are much more resistant to spills or dust. The ability to change overlay sheets also makes it easy for a single overlay keyboard to have several different uses. Usage Overlay keyboards are probably most often found in fast food restaurants, where they reduce the amount of time required to enter items. Overlay keyboards are also used in education, especially at the primary level. They can also be used by disabled people who have sensory or motor control difficulties. ref P. Image Midikeyboard.jpg thumb right A close up of one style of MIDI keyboard based on the piano user interface A MIDI keyboard is typically a piano style user interface musical keyboard keyboard device used for sending Musical Instrument Digital Interface MIDI signals or commands over a USB or MIDI cable to other devices connected and operating on the same MIDI protocol interface. This could also be a personal computer running software such as a digital audio workstation DAW that listens to and sends MIDI information to other MIDI devices connected by cable or running internal to the personal computer system. The basic MIDI keyboard does not produce sound. Instead, MIDI information is sent to an electronic module capable of reproducing an array of digital sounds or samples that resemble traditional analog musical instruments. These samples or waveforms are also referred to as voices or timbres. Not all MIDI keyboards are based on the piano style user interface. Many MIDI keyboard controllers have pads or buttons that also send MIDI signals, and most pads have a velocity sensing capability so that varying volumes of sound can be played voiced. A membrane keyboard is a computer keyboard whose keys are not separate, moving parts , as with the majority of other keyboards, but rather are pressure pad s that have only outline s and symbol s printed on a flat, flexible surface. Very little, if any, tactile feedback is felt when using such a keyboard, and error free blind typing is difficult. Membrane keyboards, which work by electrical contact between the keyboard surface and the underlying circuits when keytop areas are pressed, were used with some early 1980s home computer s, and have been much used in consumer electronics devices.
