  1. Woodville Latham

Major Woodville Latham 1837 1911 was an ordnance officer of the Confederate States of America Confederacy during the American Civil War and professor of chemistry at West Virginia University . He was significant in the development of history of cinema early film technology . Woodville Latham was the father of Grey Latham and Otway Latham, owners of a kinetoscope parlor in New York City . In December 1894 Latham and his two sons formed the Lambda Company at 35 Frankfort Street, employing Eug ne Lauste , a former Thomas Edison employee, as well as motion picture pioneer William Dickson film pioneer William Kennedy Dickson . Dickson would not leave Edison s employ until April 1895 and initially lent his expertise to the Lathams in secret. The Lambda Company developed both a movie camera and prototype movie projector, the Panoptikon eventually renamed Eidoloscope , which was demonstrated for members of the press on April 21, 1895 and opened to the paying public on May 20. These were the first public demonstrations of projected motion pictures in the United States. In 1898 the Lathams abandoned motion pictures and soon lost their patents. Major Latham outlived his sons by 1910 both Otway and Grey, who are said to have been hedonism hedonistic in nature, had died. Latham, aided by the collaboration of Dickson and Lauste, is notable for the invention of the Latham loop inside movie cameras and projectors, a significant development in the history of cinema because it allowed motion pictures to be continuously shot and projected for a much longer period than the one minute films of Thomas Edison s kinetoscope . Shortly before his death in 1911, Latham testified regarding the Latham loop at a patent hearing. 1. Léo-Ernest Ouimet

L o Ernest Ouimet March 16, 1877 March 2, 1972 was a Canadian film pioneer. File Ouimet2.jpg thumb right 150px L o Ernest Ouimet in 1910 Early life Ouimet was born on March 16, 1877 in Laval, Quebec . He planned a career in electrical engineering but stumbled upon showbusiness by chance in 1901, when Le Theatre National in Montreal asked him to rewire the theatre building. Not only did he do the job in just two days but he devised a creative lighting system that wowed audiences. Other theatres, such as the Le Cartier Theatre asked him do to the same in their theatres and he became an instant success. Le Theatre National asked Ouimet to come back to work for them as a lighting designer, and a legal loophole launched his movie career. By law, Le Theatre National was not allowed to operate in any closed venue on Sundays, so to get around this, performances took place at Sohmers Park on Sundays. From 1902 onwards, the theatre screened animations during intermissions and the projectionist showed Ouimet how to use the theatre s kinetoscope . He subsequently bought one for himself and began experimenting. ref name imdb http www.imdb.com name nm1823269 bio Leo Ernest Ouimet IMDB Biography. Retrieved May 22, 2009. ref First steps into filmmaking Due to his fascination with Edison products, he became their representative in eastern Canada and set up his own Ouimet Film Exchange to facilitate the distribution of films in the region. During the Canadian federal election, 1904 1904 federal election he used his kinetoscope to project election results on to the front wall of the newspaper Le Patrie and in 1906 turned an abandoned cabaret house into a nickelodeon movie theater nickelodeon of 500 seats. Due to the technical restrictions placed on the kinetoscope by Edison to maintain control over the market, Ouimet modified his into a Ouimetoscope and opened a 1200 seat movie theatre which he named Ouimetoscope , after the projector used to show his films, which opened in 1907. Created by photography photographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge in 1879, it may be considered the first movie projector . The zoopraxiscope projected images from rotating glass disks in rapid succession to give the impression of motion. The stop motion images were initially painted onto the glass, as silhouettes. A second series of discs, made in 1892 94, used outline drawings printed onto the discs photographically, then colored by hand. Some of the animated images are very complex, featuring multiple combinations of sequences of animal and human movement. The device appears to have been one of the primary inspirations for Thomas Edison and William Kennedy Dickson s Kinetoscope , the first commercial film exhibition system. Images from all of the known seventy one surviving zoopraxiscope discs have recently been reproduced in the book Eadweard Muybridge The Kingston Museum Bequest The Projection Box, 2004 . 1. Herman Casler

Herman Casler American inventor Sandwich, Illinois , March 12, 1867 &ndash Canastota, New York , July 20, 1939 , was co founder of the partnership called the K.M.C.D. Syndicate, along with William Kennedy Laurie Dickson W.K L. Dickson , Elias Koopman , and Henry Marvin, which eventually was incorporated into the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company American Mutoscope Company in December 1895. Biography Casler, Dickson, and Marvin had worked together in 1893 on a detective camera the size of a watch called the Photoret. Dickson, who at the time was working for Thomas Edison , next proposed that they work on a peephole film viewing device superior to Edison s Kinetoscope machine. Casler, following Dickson s proposal, invented the Mutoscope , which displayed short films through flip cards rotated by a hand crank that could be slowed at the operator s will, unlike Edison s motorized Kinetoscope, in which films were viewed through actual 35 mm film. The prototype of the Mutograph camera was completed in November 1894, first tested with film in June 1895, and the first official Mutoscope films were made in August 1895. To avoid infringement on Edison s motion picture patents, the Mutograph camera used continuous movement friction rollers to move 68 mm film into the camera, instead of intermittent movement by sprockets as Edison s 35 mm camera did. Casler s patents, which he assigned to American Mutoscope in January 1896, were used as security for financing the new company. The Mutoscope became as popular in nickelodeon parlors as the Kinetograph. However, the first public demonstration of projected motion pictures in the United States had already occurred in April 1895. Casler then designed the Biograph Projector, which was introduced on a tour of vaudeville houses in September October 1896. The 68 mm film that Casler s camera and projector used offered four times the image area of Edison s 35 mm film, a quality improvement noted by early viewers.
