DISPLAYTITLE Old KingCole film Old KingCole is a 1933 Disney cartoon in the Silly Symphonies series, based on several nursery rhyme s and fairy tale s, including Old KingCole . It was directed by David Hand animator David Hand and released on July 29, 1933. It s a remake of the 1931 Silly Symphony short Mother Goose Melodies , but in color, more details and technically advanced animation. Plot One evening in Storyland, the story book Old KingCole opens itself and the king s castle folds open. Other story and nursery rhyme books do the same thing and several famous characters leave their homes to go Old KingCole s party. There, all characters have a small sing and dance act. When the Ten Little Indians get on the stage, their dance is so catchy that Old KingCole and all the other characters join in as well. After Old Mother Hubbard accidentally pushes KingCole into a fountain , the mice from Hickory Dickory Dock tell everyone that it s midnight and that everyone should go home. All the characters return to their books, and KingCole sings a farewell song to everybody and puts out a bottle of milk for the milkman before he runs back inside and the cartoon closes. The KingCole Bar is an upscale cocktail lounge in The St. Regis Hotel in Midtown Manhattan . Many mixologists believe the Bloody Mary drink Bloody Mary made its first U.S. appearance in the KingCole Bar. The drink was then called The Red Snapper, after originally being invented by Fernand Petiot at Harry s New York Bar in Paris, France . Others contend that the iconic drink, now one of the Official Cocktails of the International Bartenders Association , was indeed invented in the KingCole Bar. Originally, the KingCole Bar was about fifty feet east of the small but ornate lobby of The St. Regis. It was a large room with many circular tables and a long north south bar above which was the famous Parrish painting. In more recent years, the bar was moved to a far smaller room east of that spot. The wonderful mural, or perhaps a slightly smaller version of the painting, is still in the bar. It features Old KingCole who was a merry old soul calling for his fiddlers three and some other musicians. The lounge has a large mural by artist Maxfield Parrish hanging behind the bar, from which the venue derives its name.
