Built by Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney . It was begun in 1607 and built largely by forced labour. Lord Orkney and his father, Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney , are acknowledged to have been among the most tyrannical noblemen in Scotland s history. The Earl s Palace was built after Lord Orkney decided that the accommodation provided by the Bishop s Palace, Kirkwall Bishop s Palace was inadequate for his needs. He decided to extend the complex by building a new Earl s Palace on the adjoining land. This was complicated by the fact he did not actually own this property. He quickly acquired it by fabricating charges of theft against the unfortunate current owner, trying him and having him executed. However, Orkney did not hold on to the property for long. Whilst in prison, Orkney s son, Robert Stewart, Lord Stewart , rose in rebellion and seized the palace, nearby St. Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall St. Magnus Cathedral and Kirkwall Castle . An army laid siege and the Castle was destroyed. Lord Orkney and his son were later executed. After Lord Orkney s death the palaces continued to be the residence of the Bishop of Orkney Bishops of Orkney sporadically until 1688, when they became the property of the Crown, and fell into ruin in the 18th century. The ruins, though roofless, still have much of their original France French influenced Renaissance elegance Historic Scotland entrance charge . Turrets and decorations carved in the sandy coloured stonework, give glimpses of the former splendour of this residence. The Bishop s Palace, Kirkwall was built at the same time as the adjacent St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall St Magnus Cathedral in the centre of Kirkwall , Orkney Islands Orkney , Scotland , was being constructed, and housed the cathedral s first bishop , William the Old of the Norway Norwegian Catholicism Catholic church who took his authority from the Archbishop of Nidaros Trondheim . The ruin ed structure now looks like a small castle . Originally it is thought to have been like a typical Royal Norwegian Palace, with a large rectangular hall above store rooms and a tower house as the Bishop s private residence. King Haakon IV of Norway , overwintering after the Battle of Largs , died here in 1263, marking the end of Norsemen Norse rule over the Outer Hebrides . The neglected palace had fallen into ruins by 1320. In 1468 Orkney and Shetland were pledged by Christian I of Denmark and Norway for the payment of the dowry of his daughter Margaret of Denmark, Queen of Scotland Margaret , betrothed to James III of Scotland , and as the money has never since been paid, their connection with the crown of Scotland has been perpetual. In 1526 the palace came briefly into the possession of William, Lord Sinclair , before he was ordered to return it to the Bishop of Orkney . When King James V of Scotland visited Kirkwall in 1540 he garrisoned his troops in the Palace and in Kirkwall Castle . Dating back to the mid 17th century the two sides are the Uppies and the Doonies, or more correctly, Up the Gates and Doon the Gates from Norn gata path or road , although it is also common in Scots language Scots . Originally the side any individual played on was decided by whether he or she was born up or doon the gate but a hospital built in the 1950s made family tradition determinant. For ferryloupers incomers, though more literally ferry jumpers, and people from the isles or rural areas their side is determined by the route taken on their first arrival in Kirkwall, by family influence, or by the side their friends play on. The game was traditionally played by men from Kirkwall and the surrounding area of St.Ola, however in recent times the games popularity has grown to include players from all areas of Orkney, including some of the outer isles. This has led to the game becoming very large and physically demanding with sometimes in excess of 350 men playing at any one time. Non Orcadians are not encouraged to participate for this very reason. Safety of players and property is top priority and the feeling among those associated with the game is that it has now become too large to be manageable from a safety aspect ... in the salt water of Kirkwall Bay, the Ba has gone doon.
