  1. Bead knitting

Image Beadknitting.JPG thumb beaded knitting on double points, with the beads threaded on in advance Beaded knitting is a type of knitting in which the stitches are decorated with ceramic or glass beads. Important advantages include 1 the surface and color effects available with beads and not with yarn and 2 the longer wear of the beads may lengthen the life of the knitted fabric significantly. The techniques are described here for beads, but knitting sequins and other perforated objects can be done analogously. Techniques There are two main approaches threading the beads on in advance, and threading the beads on individually as the object is knitted. Threaded on in advance The classic approach is to thread beads on the yarn in advance. There are several ways to go about knitting the beads in though slipping the stitch, putting the bead between stitches, and putting the bead on the stitch. 1. Shadow knitting

Shadow knitting , also called illusion knitting , is a knitting technique that produces patterns that vary with the direction of viewing. Method Despite its impressive effect, shadow knitting is a simple technique. As in mosaic knitting , the knitter alternates between two colors. Colors with good contrast are preferred, but are not required. The knitter knits two rows of color A, then two rows of color B, and repeats this throughout the body of the work. Only knit or purl stitches are used. Image shadowknitpattern.gif thumb 250px This is a basic shadow knitting pattern created in Microsoft Excel . Each row in the pattern, shown in the thumbnail to the right, represents four rows of knit or purl stitches, and each column represents one stitch. To follow this pattern, a knitter would use black and white white being the background color BC , and black being the master color MC . Start at row one. This could be thought of as Row 1 1 and is a right side row RS . Row 1 1 RS With BC, knit. Row 1 2 still following the pattern at row 1 WS Knit the blank boxes, purl the ones filled in. Row 1 3 RS Change to MC, knit. Row 1 4 WS Purl the blank boxes, knit the ones filled in. Move to Row 2 on the pattern and begin knitting the BC. This is row 2 1. Repeat for all rows and bind off. The visual effect of shadow knitting is due to the different height of the knit stitches on the wrong side rows ..., lace knitting or cable knitting . 1. Increase (knitting)

In knitting , an increase is the creation of one or more new stitches, which may be done by various methods with distinctive looks. Methods of Single Increasing knitting Yarn over increase or eyelet increase The simplest increase is to do a yarn over yarn over between two existing stitches. On subsequent rows, the yarn over will be knitted, making a new stitch. This disadvantage of this method is that a small hole eyelet is produced at the yarn over. This can be improved by plaited stitch knitting twisting the yarn over stitch similar to a make one below . Raised Increase Lift the strand connecting two knitted stitches in the row below onto the left needle effectively producing a yarn over yarn over and knit it, either normally or plaited stitch knitting twisted . This method especially if twisted leaves almost no hole, since forming the yarn over stitch from the presumably tight connecting strand draws the two neighboring stitches together. Bar increase Knit the stitch normally but without transferring the knitted stitch to the right needle the same stitch is then knitted through the back loop. Knitting through the front loop again is not feasible, since it would undo the first stitch ... to make an extra stitch in each row by knitting a doubled stitch up from the lower row. 1. Gather (knitting)

In knitting , a gather is a generic term for the several methods that draw stitches closer together laterally, i.e., within a row of knitting. Common methods include In binding , a yarn loop is passed over 2 or more stitches in the same row usually adjacent to the binding loop also known as a pullover stitch . In clustering , the yarn is wound laterally around a set of stitches in the same row, possibly several times also known as a wrap stitch . Smocking is a sewing or embroidery technique in which the tiny pleats are drawn together with thread or yarn. Before the development of elastic, smocking was used to provide a stretchable, flexible panel of fabric. Related techniques In the sewing technique, ruching , a large number of increases are introduced in one row, which are then removed by decreases a few rows later. This produces many small vertical ripples in the fabric, effectively little pleats. The technique of shirring produces a similar effect by gathering the fabric in two parallel rows not necessarily horizontal , usually by smocking. 1. English knitting

refimprove date September 2007 English knitting , also known as right hand knitting or throwing , is a style of Western knitting where the yarn to be knit into the fabric is carried in the right hand. This style is prevalent throughout the English speaking world, though it is by no means universal. Other Western knitting styles include continental knitting also known as left hand knitting and combined knitting . Despite the names, choice of knitting style has little to do with the handedness of the knitter plenty of left handed individuals use the English style, and plenty of right handed knitters use Continental. Various non Western styles also exist, many of which are substantially similar to these, but which twist each stitch, making for a subtly different looking fabric. Technique Here, we assume that there are already stitches on the needles, having been cast on previously. The yarn is wrapped around the right hand for tension in one method, the tail of the yarn is wrapped around the little finger of the right hand for tension, and over the index finger for control see illustration . The right hand will hold the needle with the most recently knit stitches. If at the beginning of a row, the right hand will hold the empty needle. The left hand holds the other needle. The knit stitch If the yarn is sitting in front of the right needle closer to the knitter , it should first be moved between the needles to the back. 1. Short row (knitting)

In knitting , a short row is a row that is not fully knitted the work is turned before reaching the end of the row. Just before the work is turned, the yarn is generally passed around the next unknitted stitch to prevent a hole from forming at the turning point. The typical bobble knitting bobble provides a simple illustration of short rows. The extra bobble stitches are knitted back and forth several times without knitting the entire row. Short rows may be used to bend a flat ribbon of knitting, which requires more fabric on the outside of the curve than on the inside of the curve. Short rows introduced on the outside edge will cause the ribbon to bend. Similar to increase knitting increases and decrease knitting decreases , a common use for short rows is in shaping, e.g., in making sock heels or French darts near the bust point. Short rows introduce extra rows courses of knitting, whereas increases introduce extra columns wales . In principle, any shaping possible with other increase decrease method is also possible with short rows. However, such shaping is often harder to visualize. Short rows are also useful in making more attractive binding off knitting bound off edges over multiple rows, e.g., in a raglan armhole, in a sleeve cap, or over a shoulder slant. The stitches to be bound off can be held in reserve on the knitting needle s without being knitted using short rows. At the end, all the stitches can be bound off at once, producing a more continuous edge without the typical ladder of decreases.
