File 2008 02 0760.jpg thumb right Wild Asian Water Buffalo es in C t Ti n National Park C t Ti n National Park lang vi V n qu c gia C t Ti n is an important national park located in the south of Vietnam , approximately 150  km north of Ho Chi Minh City . It has an area of about 720  km and protects one of the largest areas of lowland tropical rainforest s left in Vietnam. History C t Ti n national park was protected initially in 1978 as two sectors, Nam Cat Tien and Tay Cat Tien . Another sector, Cat Loc , was gazetted as a Rhinoceros Reserve in 1992 upon the discovery of a population of the Vietnamese Javan Rhinoceros , an occasion that brought the park into the world s eye. The three areas were combined to form one park in 1998. The park suffered historically during the Vietnam War when it was extensively sprayed with herbicide s like the defoliant Agent Orange however, further damage was done by logging up until the 1980s. To this day these areas have extensive bamboo and grassland cover and trees have not yet grown back. Archaeology C t Ti n archaeological site Biodiversity C t Ti n National Park consists of Tropical forests evergreen tropical and Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests deciduous forest, dominated by Dipterocarpaceae , Fabaceae and Lythraceae especially Lagerstroemia spp. , with 40 of the park comprising bamboo woodland, and the remaining 10 farmland, wetland s and grassland. The park fauna included the impressive Javan Rhinoceros , as it had one of only two populations in the world until poachers shot and killed the last rhino in C t Ti n in 2010. Asian Elephant s, Sun Bear s and Gaur still persist in the area, whereas banteng, kouprey might be extinct , and Wild Asian Water Buffalo no longer occur in Cat Tien. ref Nguyen, M., H., 2009 .
