Initially, the station operated Pirate radio unlicenced , covering the Greater London area. It attracted a wide range of African businesses that advertised and sponsored most of its programmes. Listeners were mainly the youth, but also various African High Commissioner s and Heads of State . Voice of Africa Radio finally won its bid for a five year permanent FM broadcasting in the UK FM licence in London on 16 February 2006, after six years of campaigning, making it the first and only legally licenced African radio station in the UK. The station went live on 20 August 2007. After experiencing problems with pirate stations operating on the assigned frequency 94.3  MHz , Ofcom proposed changing the station s carrier frequency to 94.0  MHz. Although licensed as a religious station, much of its schedule consists of secular music programming, including classical, folk, country, Oldies military marching band, standards, beautiful music, and music from the 1940s and 1970s. VOWR also have several information based programs that are of interest to its core demographic including Consumer Reports, a gardening show, the 50 Plus Radio Show and many others of a wide range of subjects. The station is staffed by volunteers, of which many are former broadcasters in the public and private local broadcasting industry. It broadcasts at 800  kHz on the AM band. The station first signed on July 24, 1924 under the call sign 8WMC, which stood for the Wesley Methodist Church. Reverend Joseph G. Joyce 1889 1959 started the station to provide church services to shut ins, but soon expanded it to provide public service announcements and entertainment. VOWR is one of just four broadcast radio stations in Canada whose call letters do not begin with C. The others, VOAR AM VOAR , VOCM AM VOCM , and VOCM FM , are also based in the St. John s area.
