  1. Theremin Center

The Theremin Center for Electroacoustic Music was created in Moscow , Russia in 1992 by the group of musicians and computer scientists, under the leadership of Andrey Smirnov. It was named for Leon Theremin Russian inventor of the Theremin , one of the first widely used electronic musical instruments. The Theremin Center aims to achieve a co operation of musicians, artists, scientists, and technologists who are oriented toward realization of experimental artistic projects. We envision the centre as a base from which to carry out interdisciplinary research in such fields as computer music , electroacoustic music , interactive systems, multimedia , including dance , visual arts etc., as well as a centre for the development and creation of innovative programs, technical devices and techniques. From the start the Theremin Center was intended to operate on a non profit basis and most services and equipment were donated by the founders and sponsors of the Theremin Center. Professor Jon Appleton founded the International Advisory Board and helped in developing the Theremin Center and establishing continuous relationships within the international musical and scientific communities. The Moscow State Conservatory has provided space. It was a part of the Sound Recording and Musical Acoustics Laboratory the place where in 1960s Leon Theremin was conducting his research. Since 2005 Theremin Center became a part of Electroacoustic Center at Moscow State Conservatory. 1. Electro-Theremin

The Electro Theremin , often called the Tannerin , is an electronic musical instrument developed by trombone trombonist Paul Tanner and amateur inventor Bob Whitsell in the late 1950s to produce a sound to mimic that of the theremin . ref cite web title Tannerin 2004 url http www.tompolk.com Tannerin Tannerin.html accessdate 2010 01 22 ref ref cite web title The Paul Tanner Electro Theremin Page url http www.electrotheremin.com etfaq.htm accessdate 2010 01 22 ref The instrument features a tone and portamento similar to that of the theremin or thereminvox , but with a different control mechanism. It consisted of a sine wave generator with a knob that controlled the pitch, placed inside a wooden box. The pitch knob was attached to a slider on the outside of the box with some string. The player would move the slider, thus turning the knob to the desired frequency, with the help of markings drawn on the box. The Tannerin doesn t actually sound much like the theremins of the time. The instrument was custom built at Tanner s request. Tanner appreciated the theremin s sound, but wanted greater control of pitch and attack. The Electro Theremin uses mechanical controls, a long slide bar for the pitch ... volume. This contrasts with the hand movements in space that was the original theremin s signal feature. The Electro Theremin also produces a slightly less complex timbre than the original. This is not due to the nature of the instrument, but due to Dr. Theremin s intentional harmonic generation in the output of the Theremin, which Tanner did not do. 1. Terpsitone

The terpsitone was an electronic musical instrument , invented by L on Theremin , which consisted of a platform fitted with space controlling antennae, through and around which a dancer would control the musical performance. By most accounts, the instrument was nearly impossible to control. Of the three instruments built, only the last one, made by Theremin in 1978 for Lydia Kavina his grandniece , survives today. 1. Syntheremin

unreferenced date August 2008 Syntheremin is a portmanteau of Synthesizer and Theremin , and an original musical instrument that a Japanese composer AQi Fzono conceived and invented with the cooperation of a Japanese engineer Michio Kurahashi in 1995. It s a Theremin with functions of controlling waveforms and parameters as well as synthesizing sounds. One of the distinctive functions is that it has a series of antennas and each one corresponds to a parameter , so the parameters pitch and volume like regular Theremin , plus audio filter filter , Q, envelope, Low frequency oscillation LFO speed etc. can be controlled real time just like an analog synthesizer with a lot of knobs. This way the randomness that Theremin has is further emphasized, and the unpredictable and psychedelic sounds can be generated continuously. AQi Fzono says in one of his interviews that he likes to use it as a random effect machine like an old and huge Buchla modular synthesizer rather than playing tonal scales like a regular Theremin . Syntheremin was used for the first time in AQi Fzono s 5th solo album Cosmology album Cosmology released in 1998 revealing its intriguing sounds. He says that it was the first prototype it was not very stable, and would like to build another improved unit. It fuses the elements of modular synthesizer and Theremin , is thought to be one of the electronic music instruments with unlimited possibilities of expansion in the future. A portable version of Syntheremin was used most recently in Damo Suzuki former member of Can band Can Japan tour in 2005. 1. Drum Buddy

File Quintron drum buddy.jpg thumb 250px Quintron playing Drum Buddy The Drum Buddy , invented by New Orleans Ninth Ward one man band Mr. Quintron Quintron , is a light activated oscillating drum machine which operates on the principles of an optical theremin . An electronic instrument developed in the Spellcaster Lodge QElectronics laboratory, only 44 units hand assembled by Quintron exist. Its four voices Space, Snare, Bass and Kick, are triggered by activating a photoelectric cell either intermittently or with an on off DIP switch in combination with exposure to light. The Drum Buddy is outfitted with a light fixture on a periscopic pipe fixed to its base. The fixture s bulb can be controlled by means of a dimmer switch . The bulb hangs above a rotating platen upon which a number 10 can the large size common to coffee, canned vegetables and some sauces prepared with holes and non reflective paint is placed. As the can rotates, its holes pass the Drum Buddy s photoelectric cells, firing drum like tones and theremin or Moog synthesizer like chirps or buzzes. Accomplished purveyors of the Drum Buddy can operate the instrument freestyle by scratching the can back and forth against the resistance of the platen s motor or by performing short solos on the Bass instrument bass channel s 12 point chromatic scale .
