  1. Letters of horning

Letters of horning Scots law a document ie, letters issued by civil authorities that publicly denounce a person as a rebel. The document was issued against persons who had not paid their debts. Historically, the documents would be announced by three blasts of a horn, and the documents themselves came to be known as letters of horning . A person who was denounced in these documents was described as having been put to the horn . Additional explanations br br History Originally in Scotland imprisonment for debt was enforceable only in certain cases, but a custom gradually grew up of taking the debtor s oath to pay. If the debtor broke his oath, he became liable to the discipline of the Church. The civil power, further, stepped in to aid the ecclesiastical, and denounced him as a rebel, imprisoning his person and confiscating his goods. The method declaring a person a rebel was by giving three blasts on a horn and publicly proclaiming the fact hence the expression, put to the horn. The subsequent process, the warrant directing a messenger at arms to charge the debtor to pay or perform in terms of the letters, was called letters of horning. This system of execution was simplified by the Debtors Scotland Act 1838 Personal Diligence Act of 1838 , and execution was thereafter usually by Diligence Scots law diligence see writ of execution . The granting of letters of horning, letters of horning and poinding , letters of poinding , and letters of caption all ceased to be competent following the Debtors Scotland Act 1987 ref s89 Debtors Scotland Act 1987 http opsi.gov.uk acts acts1987 pdf ukpga 19870018 en.pdf ref . 1. Letters close

NOTOC Letters close lang la litterae clausae are a type of legal document which is a closed letter issued by a monarch or government granting a right, monopoly, title, or status to someone or some entity such as a corporation. These letters are personal in nature and were delivered folded sealed so that only the recipient can read the contents of the letter. ref name Clanchy91 Clanchy From Memory to Written Record p. 91 ref This type of letter contrasts with the better known letters patent . In this type of letter, the attached seal has a rather different function to play as it will be destroyed when the letter is opened and so shows that the letter has not been tampered with. However, in being destroyed the seal can no longer ratify the authenticity of the document. The original charter s of Edward the Confessor can be considered to be a form of letters close, as they were delivered wrapped, with the seal hanging down. Later, with the introduction of radio, code letters were also used as radio callsigns. History In 1857, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland United Kingdom sponsored the Commercial Code of Signals for the Use of All Nations at Sea , which introduced four letter flag signal codes to identify individual ships. Circa 1870, the Comercial Code of Signals became the International Code of Signals . By the 1860s, individual ships were being allocated code letters in the United States and Europe . From 1874, code letters were recorded in Lloyd s Register as part of each individual vessels entry in the register. Generally, code letters allocated to a ship remained with that ship, although there are known cases where new code letters have been allocated following a change of port of registry or owner. 1. Channel letters

orphan date January 2012 unreferenced date June 2009 Channel letters are custom made metal or plastic letters that are commonly used on the buildings of business, churches, and other organizations for exterior signage . Channel letter types Standard channel letter A standard channel letter is a Three dimensional space 3 dimensional graphic sign element. Its channel is fabricated from sheet metal , most often aluminum since it will not rust. A flat sheet of aluminum is typically cut on a table by a computer controlled router. This creates the back of the channel and is the basis for the letter shape. The sides of the channel letter, called the returns , are then formed by bending a 3 to convert 6 in mm adj mid wide wikt strip strip of aluminum sheet around the aluminum back. This return can be welding welded at the Seam sewing seam or flanged and riveted to the back to create a solid can in the shape of the letter. The letter can is painted and fitted with any lighting components necessary such as Neon sign neon gas tube s or light emitting diode LED modules. A translucent plastic face usually of 3 16 thick sheet acrylic fiber or polycarbonate is cut to fit the open face of the letter can. A wikt trim trim cap border is applied to its edges which gives the letter face a finished appearance and creates a fastening surface to attach it to the letter can. When illuminated at night, channel letters draw the eye of passers by. Exposed neon channel letter These resemble standard letters, but the neon is not covered with a plastic face.
