Born in Melbourne, she was the daughter of opera singers David Miranda and Annetta Hirst and the older sister of opera singer Beatrice Miranda. After studies in London and Paris, she made her professional opera debut in The Hague in 1898. She then appeared in numerous operas in Amsterdam in successive years. In 1899 she was a resident artist at La Monnaie . She made several appearances at the Palais Garnier in Paris and at theatres in the French Provences during the first two decades of the 20th century. In 1900 1901 and from 1907 1911 she was committed the Royal Opera House on London. In 1910 she was committed to both the Manhattan Opera Company and the Philadelphia Opera Company . She notably opened the 1910 season at the Manhattan Opera House in the title role of Donizetti s Lucia di Lammermoor , a role for which she was famous. In New York and Philadelphia she also sang Gilda in Rigoletto , Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann , and the title role in Lakm . After 1918 she was primarily active with the Carl Rosa Opera Company . She retired in the early 1920s. Life and work She came from a noteworthy Piedmont ese family, Giuseppe Peano was her great uncle, and originally had an interest in painting. She continued to paint, gaining some attention with painting, throughout her life. She attended the University of Turin where Cesare Pavese led her to an increased interest in writing. She graduated with a degree in literature than worked as a librarian and teacher. During World War II she joined with the Resistance. The title is taken from the name of the heroine of the frame tale , the daughter of the Mughal Empire Mughal emperor Aurangzeb . The work consists of four Narrative poetry narrative poems with a connecting tale in prose. Engaged to the young king of Bactria , Lalla Rookh goes forth to meet him, but falls in love with Feramorz, a poet from her entourage. The bulk of the work consists of four interpolated tales sung by the poet The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan loosely based upon the story of Al Muqanna , Paradise and the Peri , The Fire Worshippers , and The Light of the Harem . When Lalla Rookh enters the palace of her bridegroom she swoons away, but revives at the sound of a familiar voice. She awakes with rapture to find that the poet she loves is none other than the prince to whom she is engaged.
