In 1981 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Spot News Photography while a photojournalist at the Fort Worth, Texas Fort Worth Star Telegram . He was honored again in 1985 for his feature photographs from Angola and El Salvador depicting their war torn inhabitants while a photojournalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer . Price received a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1977. He was a member of The Daily Texan staff during his senior year in college. His journalism career has spanned three decades. After college, he joined the El Paso Times staff. He then worked on the news staff at the Fort Worth Star Telegram. During that time 1979 1983 , Price also was a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Following flight training at Pensacola, Florida , he served on board USS Lexington CV 2 Lexington CV 2 and on 1 September 1941, he joined Torpedo Squadron 8 on board USS Hornet CV 8 Hornet CV 8 . Appointed Lieutenant 6 January 1942, Owens was with this squadron when it pressed home a courageous and determined attack against Japanese carriers 4 June during the Battle of Midway . Without the protection of fighters or accompanying dive bombers, the pilots exposed themselves to overwhelming firepower and every plane of the Squadron aviation squadron was shot down. By forcing the enemy ships to maneuver radically and eliminating Japanese air cover, the stark courage and relentless drive of the torpedo pilots, such as Lieutenant Owens, made possible the American victory that followed.
