  1. Raman laser

resonators , by Ivan Grudinin and Lute Maleki. Category Laser science optics stub cs Ramanovsk laser it Laser Raman zh ...The Raman laser is a byproduct of Raman scattering , discovered in 1928 by Nobel laureate Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and Kariamanickam Srinivasa Krishnan in liquids and independently by Grigory Landsberg and Leonid Mandelshtam in crystals. When light hits a substance, it causes the atoms in the substance to vibrate sympathetically. The collision of photons with the substance causes some of the photons to gain or lose energy, resulting in a secondary light of a different wavelength. A Raman laser takes this secondary light and amplifies it by reflecting it and pumping energy into the system to emit a coherent laser beam. The most significant difference between a Raman laser and a standard laser is the absence of population inversion in a Raman laser. Recent research In 2002, researchers at UCLA demonstrated Raman light transmission from optical wires on a silicon quantum chip and in 2004 they demonstrated the first silicon laser . In February 2005, researchers at Intel demonstrated the second generation of such lasers that are capable of operating in continuous mode on silicon chips. It is expected that these breakthroughs will greatly reduce the cost of optical computing and communications devices by 2010. Because of its crystalline structure, silicon atoms readily vibrate when hit with light. The Raman effect is 10,000 times stronger in silicon than in glass. In 2007, researchers at JPL Caltech have also discovered Raman lasing with fluorite resonators, demonstrating record low threshold and high efficiency. 1. Random laser

Laser types Category Laser science ar fr Laser al atoire ...No footnotes date September 2011 A random laser is a laser that uses a highly disordered gain medium. A random laser uses no optical cavity but the remaining principles of operation remain the same as for a conventional laser . Random laser action has been observed in many different media, including semiconductor powder, nanostructured and non nanostructured thin films , Dye laser laser dyes , ceramics and many more. Developments in nanoparticles have demonstrated that large amounts of optical scattering can occur when photons are incident. In this way, light can be diffused around a medium in much the same way as it is on white paint and in clouds . Incoherent regime If nano particles are embedded in an optical gain medium, for example, zinc oxide Ultraviolet UV emission bandgap 3.3 eV , light from a pump source e.g. frequency tripled Nd YAG laser will induce spontaneous emission of light at around 350  nm within the gain medium . These spontaneously emitted photons will then stimulate other radiative transitions in the gain medium to take place, unleashing yet more photons. This is, in many ways analogous to the chain reaction that occurs in the fission of neutrons in a nuclear reactor and has been referred to by R.H. 1. Laser broom

A laser broom is a proposed ground based laser beam powered propulsion system whose purpose is to sweep space debris out of the path of other artificial satellites such as the International Space Station . Technical description Lasers are designed to target debris between one and ten centimeters in diameter. Collisions with such debris are commonly of such high velocity that considerable damage and numerous secondary fragments is the result. ref cite web url http www.astronomycafe.net qadir q1697.html title Where can I get information about orbiting space junk? publisher Astronomy Cafe work Ask the Astronomer Archive of Astronomy Questions and Answers author Dr Sten Odenwald date 1997 accessdate 2007 03 26 ref The laser broom is intended to be used at high enough power to punch through the atmosphere with enough remaining power to laser ablation ablate material from the target. ref Jonathan Campbell, http www.au.af.mil au awc awcgate cst csat20.pdf Using Lasers in Space Laser Orbital Debris ... 1. Laser guidance

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Laser guidance is a technique of guiding a missile or other projectile or vehicle to a target by means of a laser beam. Some laser guided systems utilise beam riding guidance, but most operate more similarly to semi active radar homing SARH . This technique is sometimes called SALH , for Semi Active Laser Homing . With this technique, a laser is kept pointed at the target and the laser radiation bounces off the target and is scattered in all directions this is known as painting the target , or laser painting . The missile, bomb, etc. is launched or dropped somewhere near the target. When it is close enough for some of the reflected laser energy from the target to reach it, a laser seeker detects which direction this energy is coming from and adjusts the projectile trajectory towards the source. While the projectile is in the general area and the laser is kept aimed at the target, the projectile should be guided accurately to the target. Note that laser guidance is not useful against targets that do not reflect much laser energy, including those coated in special paint which absorbs laser energy. This is likely to be widely used by advanced military vehicles in order to make it harder to use laser rangefinder s against them and harder to hit them with laser guided munitions. An obvious circumvention would be to aim the laser merely close to the target. Countermeasures to laser guidance are Laser warning receiver Laser detection systems , Smoke screen , anti laser active protection systems.
