The lagoon is more than 35 kilometers long and contains 60 artificial island s. The Lau lagoon is home to a number of different village s, the largest of which is Forau. Forau has around 1500 permanent residents but can swell to three times that number during important local feasts or religious holidays e.g. Christmas, Easter . The Lau Lagoon is accessible only by sea, it has no roads or airstrip. The closest road ends at Manu some six kilometres south of Forau. There are six tribal chiefs who share the responsibility of governing the lagoon in cultural matters. One of these chiefs is considered the paramount chief. The people of Lau Lagoon were forced from the hills by one of the many aggressive tribe s located in the highlands, and their land rights in the area are heavily disputed. Lau started his career by displaying his art in small galleries in Hong Kong, where Lau worked as a window display designer, before searching for employment in the advertising industry. In 1997, Lau was hired to illustrate the cover art for the Anodize electronic music album. In 1998, he began the Gardener comic strip in East Touch magazine for which he is best known for. The characters featured in this comic strip were the basis for his first series of vinyl collectible figures. In 1999, his work became popular enough to attract the attention of the Sony corporation, who exclusively distributed a selection of his Gardener pieces in Asia. Lau signed a contract with Sony which lasted until 2003. During this time, Lau continued to work steadily, creating illustrations and vinyl figures in a graffiti influenced style. Graduated from Design First Institute in Hong Kong in 1992. While some of his art was on display in Lau worked with the Hong Kong hip hop group Lazy Mutha Fucka LMF , creating a series of figures based on them. unreferenced date February 2008 Lau Yew was a prominent member of the Malayan Communist Party . He was a high ranking commander in its military arm during World War II , the Malayan Peoples Anti Japanese Army . After the war he led the Malayan Peoples Anti British Army until his death in 1948. Lau Yew is believed to have favoured a seizure of power from the British in 1945 before they had fully re established themselves in Malaya, but was opposed in this by the MCP s leader Lai Teck .
