Constance Keene 9 February 1921 24 December 2005 was an USA American pianist, who attracted great praise for her 1964 recording of Sergei Rachmaninoff s Preludes, and also won critical acclaim for her recordings of the works of Johann Nepomuk Hummel , Carl Maria von Weber and Felix Mendelssohn . She was raised in Brooklyn , New York City . One of her teachers was Abram Chasins . She won the Naumburg Piano Competition in 1943. In 1946, she stood in for Vladimir Horowitz when he was unavailable for a concert, and she claimed she was the only female pianist to have ever been given this honour. In 1949 she married Chasins, who died in 1987. Life and work Keene was born in the London area, and at the age of 20 became Surveyor to the Dean and Chapter of Westminster. Six years later, he was appointed Surveyor to the Fabric of Westminster Abbey . He worked in Ireland at various times between 1752 and 1766, but nearly all his known surviving buildings are in England, especially in London and Oxford , where he had houses, and on various country estates. While much of his work is in the neo classical style, he was an early exponent of Strawberry Hill House Strawberry Hill Gothic , making good use of his knowledge of the Gothic details of Westminster Abbey . She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2004 and died, aged 52, on 20 October 2004. She taught film making and editing in the University of Wisconsin Madison until her death. She was born in 1952 and raised near Boston , Massachusetts. She received her BA Degree in 1975 in Germanic linguistics at the University of Massachusetts , Amherst, and her Masters of Fine Arts in film production from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1989. While at UCLA she served as a research assistant in Old Icelandic language and linguistics under Dr. Jesse Byock. Nietzchka worked in various capacities in the film industry in Los Angeles while attending graduate school, including positions as a recordist for a sound studio, a dialogue editor in a post production house, a projectionist, and a re recording mixer at UCLA.
