  1. 359th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery

Orphan date June 2009 The 359th Siege Artillery, Royal Garrison Artillery RGA was established under the Glamorgan or Glamorganshire Royal Garrison Artillery, Territorial Force , in Lavernock in late January, 1917. Battalion Sergeant Major George Evans, a veteran of the Territorial Forces who had seen active service, served as the provisional commander. In early February, 1917, 2nd Lt. George Rae and 2nd Lt. Robert C. Palmer were the first two officers assigned to the battery. Originally established as an 8  inch howitzer battery, the unit was re formed as a 12  inch railway gun battery while training at Lydd Ranges in April and May 1917. The battery embarked from Southampton for France on June 10, 1917, on the S.S. Archangel and arrived in Le Havre the next day. On July 5, 1917, King George V of the United Kingdom and Edward, Prince of Wales, personally inspected the battery. While in active service, the 359th Siege Artillery was positioned at Coxyde Koksijde , Oost Dunkerque Oostduinkerke , Nieuport Nieuwpoort, Belgium Nieuwpoort , Vierstraat, Oaten Wood, Passendale Passchendaele , Wytschaete Ridge, Verbrandenmolen, Voormezeele, Borre Yard, and Wolverghem. Wolverghem was the last position for the 359th, because rail tracks could not be laid fast enough to keep the railway guns within range of the retreating enemy. At Voormezeele, on the evening of April 3, 1918, Battalion Sergeant Major George Evans and four others were killed by one enemy artillery shell. The 359th Siege Artillery returned home to England some time after December 16, 1918. ref A Short Record of the 359th Siege Battery R.G.A. , by Frank House, published by H. 1. Cosmeston Medieval Village

Image Cosmeston medieval village.jpg thumb right 300px Cosmeston medieval village Cosmeston Medieval Village is a living history medieval village near Lavernock in the Vale of Glamorgan not far from Penarth and Cardiff in south Wales . Based upon remains discovered during a 1980s archaeology archaeological dig in the grounds of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park , it is a re creation of 14th century peasant life in Wales in the Middle Ages . The reconstructed village regularly plays host to groups of historical reenactment reenactors , who camp in authentic tents around the outskirts of the village, and perform displays of medieval warfare historical combat for the public. Cosmeston was also used as one of the filming locations for the BBC TV drama series Merlin BBC Merlin , broadcast in autumn 2008. History Early Medieval The original Cosmeston village grew around a fortified manor house constructed sometime around the 12th century by the De Costentin family, who were among the first Normans Norman Norman invasion of Wales invaders of Wales in the early 12th century following William the Conqueror s invasion of neighbouring England in 1066. It is unlikely that the manor house at the site was a substantial building and there is documentary evidence that by 1437 the manor house had already fallen into total ruin. Its precise site has just been located. The village would have consisted of a number of small stone round houses, or crofts, with thatching thatched roofs, as depicted in the current reconstruction, and the village population would have been between 50 to 100 people at most, including children. The de Costentin family had originated on the Cotentin peninsular in northern France . They were the first lords of the manor and they called the village Costentinstune, which over time became known as Cosmeston. They built the original manor house and perhaps a few dwellings or small farms, but for the next two centuries it appears that little further development occurred. ...   more details
