Coase . This paper challenges the traditional view that lighthouse s are examples of public good s by showing that privately owned lighthouses existed in England . Coase aligned lighthouses more with club good s because they are non excludable good excludable by way of charging port fees. Stopping short of a full analysis, the paper is generally viewed as an excellent insight into the dimensions of public goods and an invitation by Coase for a full economic analysis of the lighthouse. Recently, the paper has been criticized by Van Zandt 1993 and Bertrand 2006 for not fully appreciating the characteristic of non excludability of public goods. Historical records showed that those lighthouses which ran on voluntary payment did not survive long and eventually had to be granted the right to collect a light due by the government. Although other lighthouses were run privately, the right to collect a non negotiable light due was supported by a patent from the crown. In other words, they were not privately provided via the free market as understood by the earlier writers. Eventually, all these rights were withdrawn or bought up by the authorities because the total light dues that had to be paid by ships were too high as a result of rent seeking ... of Lighthouse Financing Myths and Realities journal Cambridge Journal of Economics year 2006 ...   more details

  1. Agent (economics)

economicus Agency law Demand Set References reflist Category Economics terminology Category Asymmetric ...In economics , an agent is an actor and decision maker in a Mathematical model model . Typically, every agent makes decisions by solving a well or ill defined Optimization mathematics optimization choice problem. The term agent can also be seen as equivalent to Player game player in game theory . For example, buyers and sellers are two common types of agents in partial equilibrium models of a single market. Macroeconomic model s, especially dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models that are explicitly based on microfoundations , often distinguish household s, business entity firm s, and government s or central bank s as the main types of agents in the economy. Each of these agents may play multiple roles in the economy households, for example, might act as consumers, as workers, and as voters in the model. Some macroeconomic models distinguish even more types of agents, such as workers and shoppers ref Robert Lucas, Jr., 1980 , Equilibrium in a pure currency economy . 1. Hoarding (economics)

In economics , hoarding is the practice of buying up and holding resources so that they can be sold to customers for profit. Definition Under capitalism capitalist theory , if this is done so that the resource can be transferred to the customer or improved upon, then it is a standard business practice eg buying up a bunch of wood to turn into a house however, if the sole intent is to hold an otherwise unavailable resource it is considered hoarding. Causes Hoarding behavior may be a common response to fear, whether fear of imminent society wide danger or simple fear of a shortage of some good. Civil unrest or natural disaster may lead people to collect foodstuffs, water, gasoline, and other essentials which they believe, rightly or wrongly, will soon be in short supply. Economics Economically speaking, hoarding occurs due to individuals obtaining and holding assets thought to be undervalued and build up reserves of it in hopes to profit or save money later. Examples include times when price controls were in effect as in the case of Germany after World War II , communist countries, or after natural disasters when goods are in such short supply that Consumer consumers stockpile this is sometimes compounded by anti price gouging laws which prevent the supply and demand curves from functioning . In these cases the hoarding disappears after the price controls are removed. Example A feature of hoarding is that it leads to an inefficient distribution of scarce resources, making the scarcity even more of a problem. An example occurs in cities where parking is inadequate. In such a case, businesses may post signs indicating that their lot is for their employees and customers only, and all other vehicles will be towed. This prevents businesses from allowing their parking to overflow .... ref http www.luc.edu law activities publications clrdocs vol19issue2 keith sharfman.pdf The Law and Economics of Hoarding ref References reflist Category Economics terminology economics stub ms Penyorokan ...   more details

History of the discipline In 1968, Nobel Prize Nobel laureate economist Gunnar Myrdal found corruption almost a taboo among economists as research topic . Indeed it has mostly been a matter of political science and sociology . However, the scenario changed since 1970s.
