He received his Ph.D. with thesis advisor Michael G. Crandall at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1975. His research is in the field of nonlinear partial differential equation s, primarily elliptic partial differential equation elliptic equations . In 2004, he shared the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Seminal Contribution to Research with Nikolai V. Krylov for their proofs, found independently, that solutions of concave, fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations are twice differentiable. Evans also made significant contributions to the development of the theory of viscosity solution s of nonlinear equations, to the understanding of the Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equation arising in stochastic optimal control theory, and to the theory of harmonic map s. He is also well known as the author of the textbook Partial Differential Equations, which is currently the standard introduction to the theory at the graduate level. Out of This World 1993 is the first fantasy novel in The Worlds of Shadow trilogy by LawrenceWattEvans . Plot introduction The premise of the novel is that parallel universe fiction parallel universe s do exist. Some have intelligent non human life, while others are populated by English speaking humans. Prior to the events of the novel, one such reality is overrun by a malevalent force known as Shadow. The World of Shadow is a typical high fantasy realm where magic exists and men fight with sword and sorcery . Although pockets of resistance against Shadow exist, their reality has all but been conquered by evil. Another reality, the Galactic Empire, soon finds that they are being invaded by minions who serve Shadow, and declare war. The Galactic Empire is depicted as a science fiction realm of yester year, akin to Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers . Many planets are colonized by the technologically advanced Empire, and telepaths serve in their military forces. Once the conflict with Shadow began, the Empire uses their telepaths to establish contact with the World of Shadow. The World of Shadow, in turn, use magic to stay in contact with the Galactic Empire. Although both realities share a common enemy, little progress is made in the way of a true alliance due to vast cultural differences. The Empire view the people of Shadow as brute barbarians who could be of no use in a real war, while the people of Shadow consider the Empire and their fascist ways as possbly the lesser of two evils . Eight years pass by since initial contact and both sides have all but given up on receiving any true help from the other. Eventually the telepaths of the Empire discover that they have made contact with a third, as yet unknown reality, modern day Earth. Independently, both worlds send diplomatic envoys to Montgomery County, Maryland , where they are either thought to be madmen or filming some ... 1996 References unreferenced date November 2007 DEFAULTSORT Out Of This World WattEvans Novel Category ... more details

A watt second also watt second , symbol Ws or W s is a derived unit of energy equivalent to the joule . harv Taylor Thompson 2008 pp 39&ndash 40, 53 The watt second is the energy equivalent to the power of one watt sustained for one second . While the watt second is equivalent to the joule in both units and meaning, there are some contexts in which the watt second is used instead of joule. The kilowatt hour kWh is equivalent to 3,600,000 watt seconds and is a unit used in the electricity market , and by producers of electricity. The distinction between joule and watt second is not analogous to the usage of newton meter for torque despite being an equivalent unit to the joule. Photography In photography, the unit for Flash photography flashes is the watt second. A flash can be rated in watt seconds e.g., 300 Ws or in joules, but historically the watt second has been used and continues to be used. The energy rating a flash is given is more of a technicality than a true benchmark in terms of light output because there are numerous factors that affect the energy conversion efficiency. For example, the actual construction of the tube will vary the efficiency but also the use of reflectors and filters will change the usable light output at the subject.
