  1. Calov Bible

The Calov Bible is a three volume 17th century Bible that contains German translations and commentary by Martin Luther and additional commentary by Wittenberg theology professor Abraham Calovius . File CalovBible.jpg thumb Title page of the Calov Bible, with Bach s signature and date 1733 in the bottom right hand corner. Connection with J. S. Bach The Calov Bible was made famous with the discovery of a long lost copy that had once belonged to the composer Johann Sebastian Bach . At the time of his death, the inventory of Bach s library specified ownership of Calovii Schriften writings of Calovius . It was not known until the 20th century what these writings were. In June 1934 a Lutheran minister, Christian G. Riedel, was attending a convention of the Missouri Synod in Frankenmuth, Michigan. While a guest in the home of his cousin, Leonard Reichle, pastor Riedel was shown a book in which he recognized Bach s signature on the http www.americanbachsociety.org images bible.jpg frontispiece . Reichle subsequently located the other two volumes in his attic, relating that his family had purchased them in the 1830s, in Philadelphia. Reichle donated the three volumes to the Concordia Seminary Library in St. Louis, Missouri, in October 1938, and the Calov Bible is still there today. Only after the upheavals of World War II, however, did the bible become known to Bach scholarship. The Calov Bible is in three volumes, each signed on its main title page by J. S. Dr Joshua Pollard FSA is a British archaeologist , who is currently Senior Lecturer and Head of Archaeology at the University of Bristol . He gained his BA and PhD in Archaeology from the Cardiff University , and has specialised in the archaeology of the Neolithic period in the UK and north west Europe, especially in relation to the study of depositional practices, monumentality, and landscape. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London Pollard has been involved in field projects around the Neolithic monument complexes of Avebury and Stonehenge , including the Longstones Project which sought to understand the sequence and context of monument construction in the later Neolithic of the Avebury region, and which led to the re discovery of a second megalithic avenue the Beckhampton Avenue leading from the Avebury henge and an unusual later Neolithic enclosure. The project also focussed on other key elements of the complex, such as the West Kennet Avenue, Falkner s Circle and the Avebury Cove. He has also been involved in the Stonehenge Riverside Project since 2004 a field project that he jointly directs with Dr Mike Parker Pearson , Dr Colin Richards , Dr Julian Thomas , Dr Chris Tilley and Dr Kate Welham . The project s aim is to understand the local and regional context of Stonehenge, not as a monument in isolation, but as part of a more extensive 3rd and early 2nd millennium BC ceremonial complex focused on the River Avon, Hampshire River Avon . Work at the henge enclosure of Durrington Walls in 2004 explored the area of the south eastern entrance, and the relationship between the henge and River Avon.
