Leopard is a term used to describe a spotted color pattern, particularly in the hair coat or skin of animal s, but also used to describe spotting patterns in plant s and fabric s. The term is derived from the black and gold spotted coat of the Leopard cat, but is used to describe many color combinations that result in spots scattered randomly across the skin or hair coat of other animals. Leopard may also be used to describe fabric designs that imitate the coat pattern of Leopards or other animals. Examples of animals with coloring patterns termed Leopard include many great cats in the Panthera species , the Leopard frog , the Leopard spotting pattern in the Appaloosa and Knabstrupper breeds of horse s, the Leopard Seal , insects such as the Giant Leopard Moth , and fish species such as the Leopard darter and the Leopard shark . Examples of plants that use the term include the Dieffenbachia Leopard Lily , and the Belamcanda chinensis Leopard flower . The leopard color pattern in horses is linked to the Lp or Leopard complex , which not only produces a spotted equine coat color coat color but also causes mottling of the skin, a white sclera around the eye, and striped horse hoof hooves . Image Corbett4.jpg thumb 200px Jim Corbett after killing the man eating Leopard of Rudraprayag in 1925 The Leopard of Rudraprayag was a male man eater man eating leopard, reputed to have killed over 125 people. It was eventually killed by famed big cat hunter and author Jim Corbett hunter Jim Corbett . The first victim of the leopard was from village Benji . For eight years, no one dared move alone at night on the road between the Hindu shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath , for it passed through the leopard s territory, and few villagers would leave their houses. The leopard was apparently so desperate for food that it would break down doors, leap through windows, claw through the mud or thatch walls of huts and drag people from them, devouring them. The British Parliament requested the aid of Corbett in the autumn of 1925. In the town of Rudraprayag there is a sign board which marks the spot where the leopard was shot. There is a fair held at Rudraprayag commemorating the killing of the leopard and people there often consider Jim Corbett a Sadhu . It has been listed as a threatened species in the United States since 1978, and the IUCN lists it as vulnerable. Leopard darters rarely exceed three inches 8 cm in length. They have 11 14 large, dark spots on their sides. These spots contrast against a light background that ranges from pale olive on the back to yellowish olive on the underside. The back of the fish has numerous saddles and bars. Leopard darters typically live less than two years, but individuals older than three years have been found. Spawning occurs in March and April, but may occur as early as February, on gravel bottomed riffles. The fertilized eggs are buried in gravel. The average clutch size is about 65 eggs. Young leopard darters begin to appear in May of each year. Food items include aquatic insects and microcrustaceans. Leopard darters are found in medium to large streams. Typically, they are not found in smaller, headwater streams. From May to February, leopard darters prefer small, noisy pools with a rubble and boulder substrate. Spawning occurs on gravel substrates however, the dominant riffle substrate may be gravel, rubble, boulder, and bedrock.
