  1. Dry transfer

Refimprove date April 2012 Image Letraset boegen.JPG thumb right The dry transfer technique was used in Letraset lettering sheets Dry transfer is a term used to describe decal s which can be applied without the use of water or other solvent . Sometimes they are called rub ons or rubdowns due to the method of application. The decal itself is on a backing material such as paper or plastic sheeting much like a Transparency projection transparency . The dry transfer is placed in the desired location with the backing side up. The decal is then applied by burnishing the backing with a stylus or similar object such as a ballpoint pen . The contact side of the decal includes a pressure sensitive adhesive the combination of heat and pressure causes the decal to stick better to the new surface than to the backing. When the backing is removed, the decal remains. This allows for ink only where needed even if the pattern is delicate, because the backing supports the decal while it is being applied. Dry transfers are used in manual technical drawing . Standard graphic elements such as title blocks, forms, patterned lines, shading, or piping or electronic schematic symbols are repetitively used. Use of a dry transfer reduces drawing time and standardizes appearance. ref David L. Goetsch , Technical Drawing Cengage Learning, 2005 ISBN 1401857604 page 72 ref Dry transfer lettering such as Letraset brand is used where hand drawn lettering is laborious to apply. 1. Copperplate script

distinguish Copperplate Gothic Image Gravura sample.png thumb 300px right Sample of a digital Copperplate typeface based on the Letraset Gravura typeface by Phill Grimshaw. Copperplate , or English round hand , is a style of calligraphy calligraphic writing, using a sharp pointed pen nib nib instead of the flat nib used in most calligraphic writing. Its name comes from the fact that the copybooks from which students learned it were printed from etched copper plates. ref http www.yourdictionary.com copperplate copperplates definition 4 ref Copperplate script was prevalent in the 19th century, but was used as early as in the 16th century in Europe. As a result, the term copperplate is mostly used to refer to any old fashioned, tidy handwriting. This style of calligraphy is different from that produced by angled nibs in that the thickness of the stroke is determined by the pressure applied when writing, instead of nib angle in relation to the writing surface. All copperplate forms minuscules, majuscules, numbers, and punctuation are written at a letter slant of 55 degrees from the horizontal. ref Winters, Eleanor Mastering Copperplate A Step by Step Manual for Calligraphers. Watson Guptill, NY, 1989 ref In Australia in the 1980s, the state of Victoria Australia Victoria prescribed a new form of handwriting which lacked the loops and curious capital letter forms that appear in standard cursive to be taught to children in government schools. This copperplate is sometimes understood to mean the old fashioned cursive. A screentone saves an artist s time by allowing quick application of textures to line art where a hand shaded area would not be reproduced in a timely or acceptable manner. Much like halftone , the size and spacing of black dots, lines, or hatches determine how light or dark an area will appear. Visual artists need to take into account how much an image will be reduced when prepared for publication when choosing the characters per inch pitch of a screentone. Screentones can also be layered to produce interference pattern s such as moire effect s, or to simulate multiple sources of shadow in an image.
