  1. Liberty Cap Large Cent

The Liberty Cap Large Cent was a type of Large cent United States coin large cent struck by the United States Mint from 1793 until 1796, when it was replaced by the Draped bust Draped Bust large cent . History The Liberty Cap large cent was issued by the Mint from 1793 to 1796. The Mint created this type of cent in an attempt to satisfy the public objections to the Chain cent and Wreath cent . It appears to have been a little more successful than its precedents, as it was continued into 1796, unlike the previous two issues, which were issued for one year only. In 1795, the planchets became too thin for the use of edge lettering on the coins, so coins from late 1795 onward have no edge lettering. Sources R.S. The Letraset business was founded in London in 1959, introducing innovative media for commercial artists and designers. ref It is known mainly for manufacturing sheets of artwork elements which can be transferred to artwork being prepared. The name Letraset was often used to Genericized trademark refer generically to sheets of dry transfer rable lettering of any brand. This technique was very widespread for lettering and other elements before the advent of the computer techniques of word processing and desktop publishing . When artwork was prepared by hand, Letraset sheets were available with letters in a large range of typefaces, styles, sizes, symbols, and other graphic elements. The letters could be transferred one by one to artwork being prepared. This was always a tedious job, but the alternative, to do the lettering by hand, was also tedious and required graphic artist skills. The name Letraset comes from the lettering application, once ubiquitous but now rarely used, although still available. Currently, Letraset s line of print patterns and textures are more commonly used than its lettering. For a brief period in the 1960s, Letraset also applied the dry transferable technique to create a children s game called Action Transfers , which would later develop into Kalkitos marketed by Gillette brand Gillette and other series of transferable fantasy figures that were very popular in the 1970s and early 1980s. 1. Dry transfer

Refimprove date April 2012 Image Letraset boegen.JPG thumb right The dry transfer technique was used in Letraset lettering sheets Dry transfer is a term used to describe decal s which can be applied without the use of water or other solvent . Sometimes they are called rub ons or rubdowns due to the method of application. The decal itself is on a backing material such as paper or plastic sheeting much like a Transparency projection transparency . The dry transfer is placed in the desired location with the backing side up. The decal is then applied by burnishing the backing with a stylus or similar object such as a ballpoint pen . The contact side of the decal includes a pressure sensitive adhesive the combination of heat and pressure causes the decal to stick better to the new surface than to the backing. When the backing is removed, the decal remains. This allows for ink only where needed even if the pattern is delicate, because the backing supports the decal while it is being applied. Dry transfers are used in manual technical drawing . Standard graphic elements such as title blocks, forms, patterned lines, shading, or piping or electronic schematic symbols are repetitively used. Use of a dry transfer reduces drawing time and standardizes appearance. ref David L. Goetsch , Technical Drawing Cengage Learning, 2005 ISBN 1401857604 page 72 ref Dry transfer lettering such as Letraset brand is used where hand drawn lettering is laborious to apply. Roman type was modelled from a European scribal manuscript style of the 1400s, based on the pairing of Roman square capitals inscriptional capitals used in ancient Rome with Carolingian minuscules developed in the Holy Roman Empire . ref Bringhurst, p 124. ref During the early Renaissance, roman and italic type were used separately. Today, roman and italic type are mixed, and most typefaces are composed of an upright roman style with an associated italic or oblique style. Popular roman typefaces include Bembo , Baskerville , Caslon , Bodoni , Times Roman and Garamond .
