no footnotes date August 2011 The Magnus Liber or Magnus Liber Organi Latin for Great Book of Organum is a compilation of the medieval music known as organum . The whole name of the work is Magnus liber organi de graduali et antiphonario pro servitio divino . Written during the 12th and early 13th centuries, this series of compositions is attributed to masters of the Notre Dame school of music, most notably L onin and his successor P rotin . These names survive today because of the testimony of an England English music theorist known simply as Anonymous IV . The Magnus Liber represents a step in the evolution of Classical music Western music between plainchant and the intricate polyphony of the later 13th and 14th centuries see Guillaume de Machaut Machaut and Ars Nova . The music of the Magnus Liber displays a connection to the emerging Gothic architecture Gothic style of architecture just as ornate cathedral s were built to house holy relic s, organa were written to elaborate Gregorian chant , which too was considered holy. One voice sang the notes of the Gregorian chant elongated to enormous length called the tenor, which comes from the Latin for to hold this voice, known as the vox principalis , held the chant, although the words were obscured by the length of notes. One, two, or three voices, known as the vox organalis or vinnola vox , the vining voice were notated above it with quicker lines moving and weaving together. File Mutus Liber cover.jpg thumb Mutus Liber cover Mutus Liber from lang la Silent Book was an alchemy alchemical text published in France in the later half of the 17th century. It professed to outline, through a series of mystical illustrations, a method of manufacturing the Philosopher s Stone . It was first printed in 1677 at La Rochelle under the editorship of Pierre Savouret. Its authorship, long obscured by abstruse claims and speculation, has been established. He was Isaac Baulot, an apothecary and savant of matters medicinal at La Rochelle , born there in 1612. Scrolls on the last plate of the Mutus Liber bear in awkward Latin the dismissal oculatus abis , having seen thou departest, which almost anagrams the author s name. ref See J. This collection was not even considered a Liber book . It was officially promulgated by Clement V in a consistory held at Monteaux , near Carpentras southern France on 21 March 1314, and sent to the University of Orl ans and the Sorbonne in Paris. The death of Clement V, occurring on 20 April following, gave rise to certain doubts as to the legal force of the compilation. Consequently, John XXII by his Bull Quoniam nulla , of 25 October 1317, promulgated it again as obligatory, without making any changes in it. Johannes Andre compiled its commentary, or glossa ordinaria . It was not an exclusive collection, and did not abrogate the previously existing laws not incorporated in it see Corpus Juris Canonici Papal Decretals .
