italictitle The Liber Memorialis is an ancient book in Latin featuring an extremely concise summary&mdash a kind of index&mdash of universal history from earliest times to the reign of Trajan . It was written by Lucius Ampelius, who was possibly a tutor or schoolmaster. Nothing is known of him or of the date at which he lived the times of Trajan, Hadrian , Antoninus Pius , the beginning of the 3rd century, and the age of Diocletian and Constantine I of the Roman Empire Constantine have all been suggested. The book is dedicated to a Macrinus, who may have been the Macrinus emperor who reigned 217 218, but that name was not uncommon, and it seems more likely he was simply a young man with a thirst for universal knowledge, which the book was compiled to satisfy. The book s object and scope are indicated in its dedication Since you desire to know everything, I have written this book of notes, that you may learn of what the universe and its elements consist, what the world contains, and what the human race has done. The Liber Memorialis seems to have been intended as a textbook to be learned by heart. This little work, in fifty chapters, gives a sketch of cosmography , geography , mythology Chapters I X , and history Chapters X to end . The historical portion, dealing mainly with the Roman Republic republican period, is untrustworthy and the text in many places corrupt the earlier chapters are more valuable, and contain some interesting information. Liber Aleph vel CXI The Book of Wisdom or Folly is the title of The Equinox , volume III, number VI, by Aleister Crowley . The book is written in the form of an epistle to his magical son, Charles Stansfeld Jones , Frater Achad, whom Crowley later doubted as being his true magical son, asserting that Achad had in fact gone insane, citing as evidence Achad s upending the tree of life in his Q.B.L., or The Bride s Reception, the first of Achad s major qabalistic works. The book consists of 208 short epistles on the philosophy of Thelema , Crowley s own ethical system of occult magic. Though the book was not published until some time after its writing in 1918, it is considered one of the forefont commentaries on Crowley s teachings. The arcane style was probably either inspired by the short epistolary style of Heinrich Agrippa s De Occulta Philosophia or the introduction to The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage which sees the author, Abraham the Jew, bequeathing the book to his son Lameck in the same hereditary spirit that this book claims. Even the titles of each epistle are given in Latin, and its often medieval guise of dealing with subject matters, such as the effects of melancholy bile , can be considered another of Crowley s great examples of using ancient texts as templates. The concept of the book is based on a passage from The Book of the Law Liber AL vel Legis , the central text of Thelema, and states what appears to be a prophecy of later knowledge and secrets of the new Aeon Thelema Aeon of Horus being taught to a magical son . Liber Scintillarum literally The Book of Sparks is a late seventh or early eighth century Patristic anthology florilegium of biblical and patristic sayings in Latin . It was compiled by Defensor , a monk who in the preface identifies himself as a member of Ligug Abbey St Martin s Abbey at Ligug , near Poitiers, and who wrote the work at the behest of his teacher Ursinus the Abbot Ursinus , the abbot of St Martin s. Virtually nothing is known of the monk beyond what the preface offers us. The compilation was written sometime between 636, when the important source Isidore of Seville died, and about 750, when the earliest extant manuscript appears to have been produced. The sparks scintillae of the title refer to sayings such as maxims and proverbs of the Lord and his saints, which have been excerpted from the Bible and the Church Fathers, and rearranged into as many as 81 chapters. The headings of these chapters refer mainly to vices e.g. avarice, fornication , virtues patience, wisdom , devotional practices confession, prayer and common themes of human life marriage, feasting . In the early part of the eleventh century, a copy of the Latin text was accompanied by an interlinear gloss interlinear Old English gloss, for which a little space between the lines was available. It is found in British Library BL , Royal MS 7 C IV, together with De vitiis et peccatis , again with an interlinear Old English gloss. The Liber Diurnus Romanorum Pontificum includes a formula of profession of faith that a newly elected Pope sent to the Exarchate of Ravenna representative at Ravenna of the Emperor of Constantinople soon after the Third Council of Constantinople 680 681 , which is referred to in the text as held recently . This profession of faith cannot have been presented to the Exarch of Ravenna at any time after the papacy revolted soon after 727 see Eutychius against the Emperor. The Exarchate itself was finally extinguished in 752. The profession of faith in the Liber Diurnus Romanorum Pontificum is addressed to Saint Peter in a form somewhat reminiscent of an oath. However, the book nowhere calls it an oath. Ambiguous expressions in some anti Catholicism anti Catholic writings could lead incautious readers to suppose that the text in the Liber Diurnus Romanorum Pontificum was used by all newly elected Popes until the eleventh century and that it had been in use since the fifth century. An example is William Webster s http www.christiantruth.com pope.html An Ecumenical Council Officially Condemns a Pope for Heresy In the Liber Diurnus the Formulary of the Roman Chancery from the fifth to the eleventh century , there is found the old formula for the papal oath...according to which every new Pope, on entering upon his office, had to swear that he recognised the sixth Ecumenical Council, which smote with eternal anathema the originators of the heresy Monotheletism , Sergius, Pyrrhus, etc., together with Honorius Charles Joseph Hefele, A History of the Councils of the Church Edinburgh Clark, 1896 , Volume V, pp. 181 187 . However, Webster does not expressly state that the formula in the Liber Diurnus Romanorum Pontificum was used by Popes from the fifth to the eleventh century, which would obviously be impossible. The Liber Diurnus formula speaks of the Third Council of Constantinople as recently held and mentions by name the Pope and the Emperor involved in the Council. Popes outside ... more details

Liber Cure Cocorum is a cookery book in verse dating from around the year 1430 in the North West of the County of Lancashire in North West England. It was first printed from a transcript made by Richard Morris in 1862 from a text in the Sloane Manuscript Collection No1986 , found as an appendix to the Boke of Curtasye . It is written in a Northern English dialect of the 15th century, probably not much earlier than the time of Henry VI. The author titles his work as The Slyghtes of Cure , or, in more modern English, The Art of Cookery . The poem treats of a great variety of dishes under the titles of potages, broths, roasted meats, baked meats, sauces and petecure , including the earliest references to several dishes, including haggis and Humble Pie .
