  1. Light Weight Kernel Threads

Light Weight Kernel Threads or LWKT is a term from computer science in general and in DragonFlyBSD in particular. LWKTs differ from normal Kernel computer science kernel Thread computer science threads in that they can preempt normal light weight process kernel threads . According to Matt Dillon computer scientist Matt Dillon , DragonFlyBSD creator cquote The LWKT scheduler is responsible for actually running a thread. It uses a fixed priority scheme but ... the fixed priorities are differentiating major subsystems, not user processes. For example, hardware interrupt threads have the highest priority, followed by software interrupts, kernel only threads, then finally user threads. A user thread either runs at user kernel priority when it is actually running in the kernel, e.g. running a syscall on behalf of userland , or a user thread runs at user priority vimAL. DragonFly does preempt... it just does it very carefully and only under particular circumstances. An LWKT interrupt thread can preempt most other threads, for example. This mimics what FreeBSD 4.x already did with its spl run interrupt in context of current process mechanism. What DragonFly does NOT do is allow a non interrupt kernel thread to preempt another non interrupt kernel thread. The mainframe z OS Operating system supports a similar mechanism, called SRB System Request Block . SRBs represent requests to execute a system service routine. SRBs are typically created when one address space detects an event that affects a different address space they provide one of several mechanisms for asynchronous inter address space communication for programs running on z OS. An SRB is similar to a Process Control Block PCB ... create an SRB. The Windows operating system knows a similar light weight thread mechanism named fibers ... platform uses fibers, somewhat analogous to the use of enclaves under z OS. 1. Synaptic weight

In neuroscience and computer science , synaptic weight refers to the strength or amplitude of a connection between two nodes, corresponding in biology to the amount of influence the action potential firing of one neuron has on another. The term is typically used in artificial neural network artificial and biological neural network biological neural network research. Computation In a computational neural network, a Euclidean vector vector or set of inputs math textbf x math and outputs math textbf y math , or pre and post synaptic neurons respectively, are interconnected with synaptic weights represented by the matrix math w math , where for a linear neuron math y j sum i w ij x i textrm or textbf y w textbf x math . The synaptic weight is changed by using a learning rule, the most basic of which is Hebb s rule , which is usually stated in biological terms as blockquote Neurons that fire together, wire together. blockquote Computationally, this means that if a large signal from one of the input neurons results in a large signal from one of the output neurons, then the synaptic weight between those two neurons will increase. The rule is unstable, however, and is typically modified using such variations as Oja s rule , radial basis functions or the backpropagation algorithm. Biology For biological networks, the effect of synaptic weights is not as simple as for linear neurons or Hebbian learning . However, biophysics biophysical models such as BCM theory have seen some success in mathematically describing these networks. In the mammalian central nervous system , signal transmission is carried out by interconnected networks of nerve cells, or neurons. 1. Weight-bearing

In orthopedics , weight bearing is the amount of weight a patient puts on the leg on which surgery has been performed. In general, it is described as a percentage of the body weight, because each leg of a healthy person carries the full body weight when walking, in an alternating fashion. After surgery of the hip, or of the bones of the leg, ankle, or foot, it is of the utmost importance for recovery to get the right amount of weight bearing when moving around with crutches or frames. The grades of weight bearing for each phase of recovery will be determined by the surgeon. Grades Non weight bearing NWB The leg must not touch the floor and is not permitted to support any weight at all. ref name Pierson 2002 The patient may hop on the other leg or use crutch es or other devices for mobility. In this grade, 0 of the body weight may be rested on the leg. Partial weight bearing A small amount of weight may be supported by the affected leg. ref name Pierson 2002 The weight may be gradually increased up to 50 of the body weight, which would permit the affected person to stand with his body weight evenly supported by both feet but not to walk . Weight bearing as tolerated Usually assigned to people that can support from 50 to 100 of the body weight on the affected leg, the affected person independently chooses the weight supported by the extremity. ref name Pierson 2002 The amount tolerated may vary according to the circumstances. unreferenced date May 2010 Weight classes are divisions of competition used to match competitors against others of their own size. This reduces the exclusion of smaller athletes in sports where physical size gives a significant advantage. Weight classes are used in a variety of sports, especially combat sports such as boxing , wrestling , and mixed martial arts . The existence of weight divisions gives rise to the practice of weight cutting . It is generally considered an advantage to be the largest individual in a weight division, therefore some athletes will work hard to lose weight through dieting and dehydration prior to weigh ins to meet the required weight class.
