  1. Light cone gauge

unreferenced date June 2008 In theoretical physics , light cone gauge is an approach to remove the ambiguities arising from a gauge symmetry . While the term refers to several situations, a null component of a field A is set to zero or a simple function of other variables in all cases. Gauge theory In gauge theory , light cone gauge refers to the condition math A 0 math where math A x 0,x 1,x 2,x 3 A 0 x 0,x 1,x 2,x 3 A 3 x 0,x 1,x 2,x 3 math It is a method to get rid of the redundancies implied by Yang Mills symmetry. String theory In string theory , light cone gauge fixes the reparameterization invariance on the world sheet by math X sigma, tau p tau math where math p math is a constant and math tau math is the worldsheet time. The advantage of light cone gauge is that all Faddeev Popov ghost ghosts and other unphysical degrees of freedom can be eliminated. The disadvantage is that some symmetries such as Lorentz symmetry become obscured they become non manifest, i.e. hard to prove . 1. Light cone coordinates

In Theory of relativity relativity , light cone coordinates is a special coordinate system where two of the coordinates, x sup sup and x sup sup are null coordinates and all the other coordinates are spatial. Call them math x perp math . Assume we re working with a d,1 Lorentzian signature. Instead of the standard coordinate system math ds 2 dt 2 delta ij dx i dx j math , with math i,j 1, dots,d math we have math ds 2 2dx dx delta ij dx i dx j math with math i,j 1, dots,d 1 math , math x left t x right sqrt 2 math and math x left t x right sqrt 2 math . Both x sup sup and x sup sup can act as time coordinates. One nice thing about light cone coordinates is that the causal structure is partially included into the coordinate system itself. A boost in the tx plane shows up as math x to e beta x math , math x to e beta x math , math x i to x i math . A rotation in the ij plane only affects math x perp math . The parabolic transformations show up as math x to x math , math x to x delta ij alpha i x j frac alpha 2 2 x math , math x i to x i alpha i x math . Another set of parabolic transformations show up as math x to x delta ij alpha i x j frac alpha 2 2 x math , math x to x math and math x i to x i alpha i x math . Light cone coordinates can also be generalized to curved spacetime in general relativity. Sometimes, calculations simplify using light cone coordinates. See Newman Penrose formalism . Light cone coordinates are sometimes used to describe relativistic collisions, especially if the relative velocity is very close to the speed of light. It s also used in the light cone gauge of string theory. See also Newman Penrose formalism relativity stub Category Theory of relativity ko it Coordinate del cono di luce ...   more details

  1. Skid cone

Orphan date February 2009 Wikify date April 2010 In forestry , a skid cone is a hollow steel or plastic cone placed over the sawn end of a log. When skidding dragging logs end wise, it presents a pointed end that deflects itself past obstacles. Skid cones are most popularly used when skidding single logs behind ATVs or light tractors, particularly when a single operator is too occupied with driving to keep a continuous watch behind. Heavy tractors and large logs smash through obstacles, horse loggers work from behind the horse and have a better view of the moving log. Skid cones are also useful when winching by rope, where it s more difficult to steer a log. Skid cones prevent logs from being stopped by roots, stumps or residual trees while being harvested. It also protects standing valuable trees along the path from being damaged. Operator safety is enhanced, as the cone prevents sudden stops caused by logs getting caught in an obstacle. However, instead of mating two spinning disks, the cone clutch uses two conical surfaces to transmit torque by friction. The cone clutch transfers a higher torque than plate or disk clutches of the same size due to the wedging action and increased surface area. Cone clutches are generally now only used in low peripheral speed applications although they were once common in automobiles and other combustion engine transmissions. They are usually now confined to very specialist transmissions in racing, rallying, or in extreme off road vehicles, although they are common in power boats. This is because the clutch does not have to be pushed in all the way and the gears will be changed quicker. Small cone clutches are used in synchronizer mechanisms in manual transmission s. 1. Cone tracing

Refimprove date December 2009 Cone tracing is a derivative of the Ray tracing graphics ray tracing algorithm that replaces rays, which have no thickness, with cones. Cone tracing is related to beam tracing , but uses circular rather than polygonal cross sections. Cone tracing solves certain problems related to Sample signal sampling and aliasing , which can plague conventional ray tracing. However, cone tracing creates a host of problems of its own. For example, just intersecting a cone with scene geometry leads to an enormous variety of possible results. For this reason, cone tracing has remained mostly unpopular. In recent years, increases in computer speed have made Monte Carlo method Monte Carlo algorithms like distributed ray tracing much more viable than cone tracing. Dual cone The dual cone math C math of a subset math C math in a linear space math X math , e.g. Euclidean space math mathbb R n math , with topological dual space math X math is the set math C left y in X langle y , x rangle geq 0 quad forall x in C right , math math C math is always a convex cone , even if math C math is neither convex set convex nor a linear cone cone . When math C math is a cone, the following properties hold ref name Boyd cite book title Convex Optimization first1 Stephen P. last1 Boyd first2 Lieven last2 Vandenberghe year 2004 publisher Cambridge University Press isbn 9780521833783 url http www.stanford.edu boyd cvxbook bv cvxbook.pdf format pdf accessdate October 15, 2011 pages 51 53 ... contains no line in its entirety. If math C math is a cone and the closure of math C math is pointed, then math C math has nonempty interior. math C math is the closure of the smallest convex cone containing math C math . A cone is said to be self dual if math C C math . The nonnegative orthant ... are self dual. Polar cone Image Polar cone illustration.svg right thumb The polar of the closed convex cone math C math is the closed convex cone math C o, math and vice versa. For a set math C math in math X math , the polar cone of math C math is the set math C o left y in X langle y , x rangle ... 1970 isbn 9780691015866 pages 121 122 ref It can be seen that the polar cone cone is equal to the negative of the dual cone, i.e. math C o C math . For a closed convex cone math C math in math X math , the polar cone is equivalent to the polar set for math C math . ref cite book last Aliprantis ...   more details
