Both have dielectric anitroscopy, or the ability to change directions and absorb or transmit light depending on electric field s. Polymeric liquid crystals form long head to tail or side chain polymer s, which are woven in thick mats and therefore have high Viscosity viscosities . The high viscosities allow the polymeric liquid crystals to be used in complex structures, but they are harder to align, limiting their usefulness. The polymerics align in microdomains facing all different directions, which ruins the optical effect . One solution to this is to mix in a small amount of photo curing polymer, which when spin coated onto a surface can be hardened. Basically, the polymeric liquidcrystal and photocurer are aligned in one direction, and then the photo curer is cured, freezing the polymeric in one direction. Under bright illumination e.g. when exposed to daylight the display acts mainly as a reflective display with the display contrast contrast being constant with illuminance . Only in dim and dark ambient situations an auxiliary transmissive backlight should be provided. When an illuminance sensor is added for control of the backlight, such a transflective LCD can be read over a wide range of illuminance levels. This is why that technique is often found in automotive instrumentation. In portable electronic devices the transflective mode of operation helps to save battery charge, since in bright environments no backlight ing is required.
