Culture of Chad The population of Chad derives from indigenous Africangroups, whose composition has been altered over the course of years through successive invasions from the Arabic north. The present population is a mixture of at least 200 ethnicgroups. Ethnicgroups The population can be broadly divided between those who follow the Islam ic faith and the peoples of the south, by which is meant the five southernmost prefectures. The Arab invaders brought Islam, perhaps as early as the 8th century, and today their descendants form a relatively homogeneous group, localized in the regions of Chari Baguirmi and Ouaddai , but mostly seminomadic. Muslim indigenous groups include Arabs, Toubou , Hadjerai , Fulbe , Kotoko , Kanembou , Baguirmi , Boulala , Zaghawa people Zaghawa , and Maba people Maba . Some indigenous groups, such as the Salamat people Salamat and the Taundjor , were largely Arabized by intermarriage over the years. Other Muslim peoples include the Fulani , the great sheep and gatherers of Chad. Demographics Among the non Muslim indigenous peoples, the most important and the largest single group in Chad are the Sara people Sara , about 30 percent of the population. They live in the valleys of the Chari River Chari and Logone River Logone rivers and are farmers of considerable skill. Others include the Ngambaye , Mbaye , Goulaye , Moundang , Moussei , and Massa . There are about 150,00 nonindigenous inhabitants, of whom about 1,000 are French people French . Tsogho is their language, hence the name Mi Tsoghos where the prefix Mi means plural . They are a relatively small ethnic group who are revered and feared for their abilities in conjuring spirits from the afterworld. They may represent the first non Baka Gabonese of the entire area. This knowledge can be extrapolated from the widespread usage of Mitsogho words and customs especially pertaining to the animistic religious practices of all Gabonese ethnicgroups. For example, Bwiti, the dominant religious doctrine of the country is a Mitshogo name and the Bwiti is based on the magic powers of the sacred wood or ibogha small shrub Tabernanthe iboga which is also a Mitsogho word meaning healing ibo and wood gha. Nearly all healing ceremonies in Gabonese traditional culture involve the singing of Mitsogho songs. In fact, Mitsogho words are so well known throughout the entire country that at one point the government was considering making Mitsogho the national ethnic language.
