From the introduction of TOPS in 1973, all BritishRail diesel and electric locomotives and multiple units were allocated to a particular Traction Maintenance Depot or TMD. Drawing from the terminology of steam traction, these deports were generally referred to as sheds , and indeed most locations were those which had possessed depots for steam locos. Each TMD had a two character code which was originally displayed underneath the number of each locomotive allocated there. Later this was extended to cover each carriage of Diesel multiple unit Diesel Multiple Units DMUs , and even some Passenger car rail coaching stock at this time additional depot codes were added covering places with Coaching stock allocations, and also Works locations. Depot allocations were discontinued during the 1990s when BritishRail moved to a system of allocating locomotives to pools related to their use. BritishRail diesel locomotives 08 list Category Preserved diesel locomotives BritishRail Class ...File 13029 shunter.jpg thumb 13029 at Tyseley Locomotive Works in 2010 The BritishRail Class 08 was the standard class of diesel locomotive designed for shunting. From 1953 to 1962, 996 locomotives were produced, making it the most numerous of all British locomotive classes. There were also 26 of the near identical but higher geared BritishRail Class 09 Class 09 , and 171 similar locomotives fitted with different engines and transmissions some of which became BritishRail Class 10 Class 10 , which together brought the total number of outwardly similar machines to 1193. Since their introduction, the nature of rail freight in Britain has changed considerably, reducing or removing the need for shunting, therefore only a few Class 08 locomotives remain in service today. However, many have found an active retirement on heritage railway s in Britain, with at least 65 being classed as preserved, although there was a 66th preserved member which was preserved at Crewe but was sinced scrapped in early 2009 , though there may be more unregistered Class 08s still working in Britain or abroad. ref name x http www.wnxx.net fleetstatus Fleet.htm Fleet status subsection Class 01 14 wnxx.net ref Their low maintenance requirements means that most of them are still in operational condition, with only a few examples left unrestored.
