The BankNotes Tax Act of 1910 effectively ended the era of private currency in Australia . It is a federal law that imposes on all bank issued currency a tax of ten per cent. The tax applies on all banknotes issued or re issued by any bank in the Commonwealth after the commencement of this Act, and not redeemed. The effect of the tax was to bring to an end the historical practice of private sector currency creation in Australia. Prior to the act of 1910, the dominant form of currency in Australia was state issued currency and bearer redeemable promissory note s issued by private banks and denominated in pound sterling. The Act allowed the Federal government Treasurer to issue notes in denominations of 10s., 1, 5, 10, and any multiple of 10. These were to be legal tender and payable in gold coin on demand at the Commonwealth Treasury. This act perpetuates the effective prohibition of private currencies in Australia. The Royal BritishBank was a United Kingdom British Joint stock company joint stock bank, established under a Royal Charter in 1849, that collapsed in 1856, causing a scandal. In 1858 the eight directors not including the bank s founder, John MacGregor Glasgow MP John MacGregor , Member of Parliament for Glasgow, who had left the bank in 1854 and died in 1857 were put on trial in February 1858 for conspiracy to defraud the bank s customers at the Court of Queen s Bench before the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales Lord Chief Justice , John Campbell, 1st Baron Campbell Lord Campbell . On the first day of the trial the Edward VII of the United Kingdom Prince of Wales attended and sat on the bench next to the Lord Chief Justice. The jury found each of the defendants guilty of the charges and they were given sentences ranging from a nominal fine of one shilling to imprisonment for up to one year. By July 1858, however, only one of the convicted, the former manager of the bank and arguably the least influential person among the convicted, yet remained in prison.
