  1. Representations of African Americans in movies

essay like date April 2012 EDIT BELOW THIS LINE The presence of African Americans in major movie roles has been controversial since Hattie McDaniel played Mammy, the house servant, in Gone with the Wind . In the 1930s and 1940s, black characters in the movies were mostly cheerful, unintelligent, humble, pious and gentle in short, essentially harmless. Lillian Yarbo was a competent African American actor and an attractive woman who appeared in nearly 50 films in the 1930s and 1940s, mostly as maids or other servants, and mostly uncredited.
