  1. Blue and Brown Books

Refimprove date September 2010 The Blue and Brown Books are two sets of notes taken during lectures conducted by Ludwig Wittgenstein between 1933 and 1935. They were mimeographed as two separated books and a few copies were circulated in a restricted circle during Wittgenstein s lifetime. The lecture notes from 1933 4 were bound in blue cloth and the notes dictated in 1934 5 were bound in brown. Rush Rhees published them together for the first time in 1958 as Preliminary Studies for the Philosophical Investigations , Generally known as The Blue and Brown Books by Ludwig Wittgenstein ref Preliminary Studies for the Philosophical Investigations , Generally known as The Blue and Brown Books by Ludwig Wittgenstein, London Blackwell Publishers Ltd., 1958 ref . Inchoate versions of many of the ideas that would later be more fully explored in the Philosophical Investigations are found there, so they offer textual evidence for the genesis of what became known as Wittgenstein s later philosophy. The Blue Book The Blue Book was dictated between 1933 and 1934, and contains certain themes unaddressed in Wittgenstein s later works, including deliberations on thinking as operating with signs. An early conception of what would later become known as language games is present in the text, which represents the first period of Wittgenstein s thought after 1932, a method of Linguistic description linguistic analysis which would later become ordinary language philosophy . The Brown Book During the academic year 1934 5 Wittgenstein dictated to Francis Skinner and Alice Ambrose a text of which three copies were typed and bound. Later it became known as the Brown book . Wittgenstein contemplated publishing and attempted a German revision, but ultimately abandoned the project as worthless. ref Ibid. , preface p.v. ref References references Wittgensteinend DEFAULTSORT Blue And Brown Books Category Ludwig Wittgenstein Category Contemporary philosophical literature Category Linguistics Category ...   more details

The term Brad y Llyfrau Gleision was coined by the author Robert Jones Derfel R. J. Derfel in response to the Reports publication. The public inquiry was carried out as a result of pressure from William Williams Radical politician William Williams , Radicals UK Radical MP for Coventry , who was himself a Welshman by birth and was concerned about the state of education in Wales . The enquiry was carried out by three England English commissioner s, R. R. W. Lingen, Jellynger C. Symons and H. R. Vaughan Johnson. The commissioners visited every part of Wales during 1846, collecting evidence and statistics. However, they spoke no Welsh language Welsh and relied on information from witnesses, many of them Anglican clergy men at a time when Wales was a stronghold of Nonconformism . The work was completed by 3 April 1847, and Lingen presented his report to the Government on 1 July of that year in three large blue covered volumes. Their report was detailed. 1. Little Boy Blue (poem)

Little Boy Blue is a poem by Eugene Field about the death of a child, a sentimental but beloved theme in 19th century poetry. Contrary to popular belief, the poem is not about the death of Field s son, who died several years after its publication. Field once admitted that the words Little Boy Blue occurred to him when he needed a rhyme for the seventh line in the first stanza. The poem first appeared in 1888 in the Chicago weekly literary journal, America . Its editor Slason Thompson changed the penultimate line That they have never seen our Little Boy Blue to its present form. The poem was republished by Charles Scribner s Sons in 1889 in Field s The Little Book of Western Verse . In 1976, Frank Jacobs wrote a parody of the poem for Mad magazine Mad magazine. Text blockquote poem The little toy dog is covered with dust, But sturdy and stanch he stands And the little toy soldier is red with rust, And his musket moulds in his hands. Time was when the little toy dog was new, And the soldier was passing fair And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue Kissed them and put them there. Now, don t you go till I come, he said, And don t you make any noise So, toddling off to his trundle bed, He dreamt of the pretty toys And, as he was dreaming, an angel song Awakened our Little Boy Blue Oh the years are many, the years are long, But the little toy friends are true Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand, Each in the same old place Awaiting the touch of a little hand, The smile of a little face And they wonder, as waiting the long years through In the dust of that little chair, What has become of our Little Boy Blue, Since he kissed them and put them there. blockquote poem References James William Searson and George Ellsworth Martin. 1911.
