It consists of a large mound with a passage running through the centre and several small chambers opening off it. Human remains were interred in these chambers. It is unlikely that any of these remains are still within the mound, as the barrow was open for thousands of years before being sealed in 1976 to prevent further damage to the site.     Addington long barrow is a badly damaged Neolithic chambered long barrow near Addington, Kent Addington in the England English county of Kent . It is one of a group of monuments known as the Medway megaliths . File Addington barrow chamber.jpg thumb 300px right View of the damaged burial chamber It is rectangular long barrow measures convert 61 m ft in length and varies from convert 14 m ft to convert 11 m ft in width as it narrows. It is oriented northeast southwest. The edge of the barrow is marked by a Megalithic architectural elements kerb and the remains of the chamber may be indicated by a number of fallen stones at the northeastern end. A road runs through the middle of the barrow and when it was expanded in 1827, two stones from the kerb were removed and placed in woodland south of the monument. In 1845, L.B. Larking, a local parson dug into the barrow, finding pieces of rough pottery In 1981, archaeologists surveyed the site identifying 25 original stones on all four sides of the structure, forming the kerb. A slight depression surrounding the mound may indicate the presence of a surrounding ditch. It and the nearby Chestnuts long barrow are open for public viewing by appointment with the landowner. Chambered long barrows are a type of megalithic burial monument found in the British Isles in the Neolithic . Long barrow s either contained wooden or stone burial structures beneath the tumulus barrow and the surviving megalithic stone in the latter means that they are the ones referred to by archaeologist s as chambered. Although typically described as a long barrow , the mound is actually a transected gallery grave . It was probably built before 3000 BC. ref English Heritage display board at the entrance gate, July 2008 ref It is about convert 180 ft m in length and contains a stone built central passage with two chambers on either side and another at the end. The earthen mound is surrounded by a dry stone Revetment revetting wall . To the east of the mound is a deep forecourt. The barrow was archaeological ly excavated in 1821, revealing the remains of 15 skeletons and a later, intrusive Roman Britain Roman age burial above the northeast chamber. It was excavated again in 1854. The mound is named after Hester, wife of the 17th century landowner Henry Pegler. Hester died in 1694, and Henry in 1695. It is clearly sign posted from the side of the nearby Crawley Hill B4066 road between Uley and Nympsfield . Access is by means of a grass track towards the wood and then a small footpath through a gap in the hedge. The barrow lies in the corner of the adjoining field next to the wood. The barrow has been reopened after a short closure for essential health and safety work.     The Chestnuts long barrow is a Neolithic chambered long barrow near Addington, Kent Addington in the Counties of England English county of Kent . It is one of a group of monuments known as the Medway megaliths . The tomb was built in an area of extensive earlier Mesolithic activity which had been known from surface spotfinds. When the site was excavated in summer 1957 by its owner, Mr E. Boyle, stratified evidence of Mesolithic settlement was found directly beneath the tumulus barrow . Further work was undertaken in 1959 by J Alexander who found sherds of Grimston, Beaker culture Beaker and Peterborough ware as well as flint arrowheads. As at the nearby Coldrum Stones the stones had not been set in socket holes by its builders. In plan the tomb was an oblong chamber, oriented east west and blocked at both ends. It had a facade of four stones, two on either side of the eastern end. The chamber, covered by two capstones, was about 4m by 3m. and just over 2m tall. It was flanked by two large megaliths which dominate the site No evidence of a Megalithic architectural elements kerb has been identified and the capstones have since fallen and rest on the ground nearby.
