Unreferenced date June 2007 The Wier Longleaf Lumber Company was a lumber and milling operation established by Robert W. Wier in East Texas that ran from 1917 until 1944. During that period, the company clearcut more than 86,000 acres 350 km of virgin pine forest in Newton County, Texas Newton , Jasper County, Texas Jasper and Sabine County, Texas Sabine counties. Because the city fathers of nearby Burkeville did not appreciate the rough workers Wier s company brought in, Wier established two new towns, Wiergate and Bon Wier , four miles away to house the company s employees. In its heyday, the mill could process approximately 200,000 feet of longleaf yellow pine every 10 hours. Wier also established a railroad to connect the mill and town to Newton. Towards the end of the Second World War, Wier sold his operation and closed down the mill, leading to the decline of Wiergate and Bon Wier. Although Wier Longleaf Lumber Company provided desperately needed jobs for many poor in this area of the rural South during the Great Depression, this came at the expense of environmental damage and the diminishment of ecological diversity. Whereas before the region was home to southern magnolia , black cherry , and white ash trees, the company reseeded the area with faster growing Loblolly Pine loblolly pines . Because by an act of the State of Texas much of this area is now legally protected, the region has begun to redevelop its prior biodiversity. He concludes that Songs from the Longleaf Pines is Charlie Daniels tribute to bluegrass gospel a tribute album that covers two rarely touched upon aspects of Daniels music. He s recorded bluegrass numbers before, and his music certainly has been informed by it, but he s never done a full fledged bluegrass album before and, apart from a low budget collection in the early 2000s, he s never done an all out gospel record. So, this is a first, which would be noteworthy in of itself, but the truly remarkable thing about Songs from the Longleaf Pines is that it s a lively ... more details

Orphan date February 2009 The Sonderegger Pine pinus sondereggeri is the only named southern pine hybrid. Another common name is the Bastard Pine. It is a naturally occurring cross between loblolly pine pinus taeda and longleafpine pinus palustris . It was originally described by H. H. Chapman 1922 who named it after its discoverer, V. H. Sonderegger, a state forester of Louisiana. This pine usually occurs singly or in small groups where both loblolly and longleaf pines overlap in range. Because the flowering of both parental trees usually occur at the same time of year, no phenological barrier exists, thus the two freely cross. Tree characteristics are normally intermediate between loblolly and longleaf. Sonderegger pine is not resistant to fusiform rust like its parent, longleafpine. Because this hybrid pine possesses heavy limbs and long needled foliage like the longleafpine, one may confuse Sonderegger Pine with LongleafPine. However, the striped brown bud of Sonderegger is a distinguishing characteristic as Longleaf possesses a white bud. Also, intermediate in size, the cone is armed similarly to a cone of the Loblolly Pine. Because no grass stage exists for this hybrid, it has significant height growth during the first year. Thus, it is easily detected in uniform plantings of longleafpine. File Sonderegger pine seedling.jpg thumb Sonderegger pine seedling with yellow paperclip amongst longleafpine seedlings showing the elongated stem of this species. Even though it is called unflattering names like bastard pine, it might actually be superior to either of its parents, but the jury is still out on that one. ref Schoenike et al, 1975 ref Wood properties differences ...
