Lloyd , who twisted kraft paper round a metal wire, placed the paper threads on a loom and wove them into what was to become the traditional Lloyd Loom fabric. Lloyd Loom chairs quickly became very popular in the United States and in 1921, Marshall B. Lloyd sold his patent to an English manufacturer, which used Lloyd Loom in an original manner to create a collection of typical English furniture. Lloyd Loom was soon all the rage in Europe. At the height of its popularity, in the 1930s, Lloyd Loom furniture could be found in hotels, restaurants and tea rooms, as well as aboard a Zeppelin , cruise ships and ocean going liners. When the factory in England was bombed at the end of the Second World War , the production of Lloyd Loom chairs came to a halt in Europe. Lloyd Loom of Spalding furniture is still manufactured in the traditional way in their Lincolnshire Factory, as does Geoffrey Lusty of William Lusty UK , who is the grand son of Willam, from Chipping Camden in Gloucestershire. Kraft paper is twisted round a metal wire, forming paper threads that are woven into mats. This upholstery is then attached to a beech wood frame. Many companies use inferior woods such as rattan and employ labour from the far east. Currently, Lloyd Loom of Spalding and Geoffrey Lusty of Wilam Lusty UK are just two of the few remaining British manufacturers of Lloyd Loom, and both firms remain true in their designs to the original practices of Marshall B. The Loom project s goal is the development and fielding of advanced tools for knowledge representation and reasoning in Artificial Intelligence. Loom is a language and environment for constructing intelligent applications. At its heart is a knowledge representation system that is used to provide Deductive reasoning deductive support for the declarative portion of the Loom language. Declarative knowledge in Loom consists of definitions, rules, facts, and default rules. A deductive engine called a classifier utilizes forward chaining , semantic unification and object oriented truth maintenance technologies in order to compile the declarative knowledge into a network designed to efficiently support on line deductive query processing. The Loom system implements a logic based pattern matcher that drives a production rule facility and a pattern directed method dispatching facility that supports the definition of object oriented methods. The high degree of integration between Loom s declarative and procedural components permits programmers to utilize logic .... The enchanted loom is a famous metaphor for the brain invented by the pioneering neuroscientist Charles S. Sherrington in a passage from his 1942 book Man on his nature , in which he poetically describes his conception of what happens in the cerebral cortex during arousal from sleep Ref label A a none quote The great topmost sheet of the mass, that where hardly a light had twinkled or moved, becomes now a sparkling field of rhythmic flashing points with trains of traveling sparks hurrying hither and thither.
