A committed nationalist who saw literature as an important aspect of Canada s cultural development in the mid twentieth century, Pierce lent his name to the Lorne Pierce Medal , established in 1926 to honor writers, critics, and educators for their outstanding contributions to the development of Canadian literature and culture. Among the many writers whom Pierce fostered at Ryerson Press were Frederick Philip Grove , E.J. Pratt , A.J.M. Smith , A. M. Klein , P.K. Page , Dorothy Livesay , Earle Birney , and Marjorie Pickthall . Along with novels and poetry, Ryerson also published important anthologies and books of literary criticism. Beginning in 1927 he edited the series of Ryerson books of prose and verse, which brought Canadian literature into Canadian school classrooms, and he was the author of critical studies of Pickthall and the early Canadian novelist William Kirby author William Kirby . Legacy The Lorne Pierce Medal remains an important award for the recognition of excellence in Canadian literature and criticism. After Pierce s death, his large collection of Canadian literary first edition s was bequeathed to Queen s University in Kingston, Ontario , where it has been expanded and remains a significant repository of rare Canadian books.     Lorne Smith 1928 2002 was an ice hockey player and later a coach who played defenceman ice hockey defence . He was born in Port Credit, Ontario Port Credit , Ontario . He played for the Baltimore Clippers , Moncton Hawks and Saint John Beavers before moving to the Nottingham Panthers in 1952. He appeared 421 times for the Panthers over eight seasons, scoring 85 goals, 149 assists and 234 points. He also received one first team all star selection and three second team all star selections. In 1958 he was made coach of the Panthers following the departure of Chick Zamick , leading the club until its closure in 1960. Following the closure of the Panthers, Smith settled in Nottingham where he died in 2002. Molleken was head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks at the end of the 1998 99 NHL season 1999 and the beginning of the 1999 2000 NHL season 2000 season. He was nominally demoted to an assistant under Bob Pulford in December 1999, but Pulford allowed Molleken to continue making most of the on ice decisions while serving largely as a senior consultant. He is remembered primarily for receiving a black eye from Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee following an infamous September 25, 1999 preseason game in which, among other things, Capitals winger Trevor Halverson suffered a career ending concussion. He began his career photographing rock concerts in his home town of Toronto, featuring performers from Bruce Springsteen to Madonna entertainer Madonna . Resnick s first book of photographs, Live in Concert 10 years of Rock and Roll , was published in 1987 and includes images of more than 60 bands. An overland journey to Africa inspired Resnick to pursue photography in many countries, eventually leading him to Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Greenland, Cuba, China, across Europe and to 22 countries in Africa. Eventually Resnick lived in Amsterdam for six years working on commercial projects and spent more than a year in each of Cuba and Africa working on long term book projects.
