It flows past settlements like Ammanford and Hendy in Carmarthenshire and Pontarddulais in Swansea . The river divides Carmarthenshire from Swansea for much of its course and it separates Hendy from Pontarddulais at the point where the river becomes tidal. The Loughor meets the sea at its estuary near the town of Loughor where it separates the south coast of Carmarthenshire from the north coast of the Gower Peninsula . Among its tributaries is the River Amman , which joins the Loughor near Pantyffynnon . In the 18th century, the river was a noted salmon and sea trout river. Fish from the river was then carried on ponies to be sold at Swansea Market . The fishing declined in the 19th century due to increasing pollution from industrialisation. Access to the adjacent Whiteford Sands beach to the west is only available at low tide. The bay is not suitable for swimming or other water sports due to its proximity to the Loughor estuary . The waters experience very strong currents from the Loughor estuary with powerful waves along with high tides and shifting sand bank s. When a strong south westerly wind is blowing, dedicated windsurfers can be seen on the waters near the bay. Nearby villages include Llangenith , Llanmadoc and slightly farther is Llanrhidian . Leucarum was a coastal auxiliary castra fort in the Roman province of Britannia . Its remains are located beneath the town of Loughor in the Wales Welsh county of West Glamorgan . The Roman Empire Romans built a rectangular or trapezoidal fort at the mouth of the River Loughor in the late 1st century to house a regiment of Roman auxiliary troops. Stone defences were added to the earthen ditch and rampart by 110 and the fort was occupied until the middle or end of that century. However, it was later abandoned for a time and in the early 3rd century the ditch naturally silted up. It appears to have been brought back into use during the rule of Carausius who was worried about Irish raids, but was abandoned again before the 4th century.
