It is located over a steep sided gorge , about 4  km north west of Aniane in the H rault d partement . Constructed by Benedictine monks in the first half of the 11th century, it provided a link between the abbey at Aniane and the Gellone Abbey at Saint Guilhem le D sert . Though subsequently widened and raised several metres around 1770, it has retained its original shape. Vehicular traffic is now catered for by a newer bridge, from which splendid views may be had of the original bridge and an aqueduct that takes water to the vineyards of Saint Jean de Fos . The bridge has been listed by the French Ministry of Culture as a monument historique since 1935 and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France . There are two other bridges in H rault known as Pontdu Diable , at Olargues and at Villemagne l Argenti re . The pont Saint Landry 1630 1634 was the first of these. In 1717 a wooden bridge was rebuilt, with seven arches, and named the Pont Rouge , due to the colour in which it was painted. It was destroyed in 1795. In 1804, under the direction of the engineer Dumoustier, a new two arch bridge was built, 70 m long and 10 m wide, and mainly in oak. It was demolished in 1811, and a suspension bridge replaced it in 1842. Twenty years later, this was replaced by a metallic bridge, with a single arch with a 64m opening. In 1939, this one was demolished. In 1941, it was replaced by a passerelle resembling an iron cage. In 1968, the present bridge was begun, and inaugurated in 1970.
