Mergeto lubrication date April 2010 Brief description of lubrication Main LubricationLubrication is the process of reducing wear of surfaces which are in moving contact with each other, by interposing a lubricant between the surfaces to more evenly spread the load pressure generated between the surfaces. Adequate lubrication is obtained when the relative motion of the parts is smooth and continuous, with only mild wear. If wear is excessive, or if the parts seize up or break, the lubrication has been inadequate or has broken down. Lubrication regimes When progressively increasing the load between the contacting surfaces three distinct situations can be observed with respect to the mode of lubrication, which are called regimes of lubrication Fluid film lubrication In this regime the lubricant fluid carries the externally applied load entirely either with the help of an external pressure, which is called Hydrostatic Lubrication , or totally by the hydrodynamic forces acting in the conjunction due to the relative movement of the surfaces and the viscous resistance of the fluid, which is called Hydrodynamic lubrication . ref San Andr s. unreferenced date August 2010 Automatic lubrication also called autolub or auto lub refers to a lubrication system where 2 stroke oil is automatically mixed with fuel and manual pre mixing of fuel and 2 stroke oil is not needed. Occasional filling up of the 2 stroke oil reservoir is needed. This system is popular with the users of 2 stroke engine , specially motorcycles as it eliminates the inconvenience and messiness of pre mixing fuel and 2 stroke oil. Vespa Sprint is an example where pre mixing of 2 stroke oil is required. An example of application of automatic lubrication system is Suzuki AX100 motorcycle. The motorcycle has a separate oil reservoir on its right side which supplies the cylinder with 2 stroke oil proportional to acceleration. Advantages of autolube 1. Consistent lubrication and oil consumption is reduced greatly 2. More effective lubrication results because the oil enters the engine in larger size droplets 3. There is much less unwanted carbon deposited on the spark plugs, cylinder heads, pistons and exhaust system. 4. There is much less exhaust smoke 5. Acoustic or sonic lubrication occurs when sound measurable in a vacuum by placing a microphone on one element of the sliding system permits vibration to introduce separation between the sliding faces. This could happen between two plates or between a series of particles. The frequency of sound required to induce optimal vibration, and thus cause sonic lubrication, varies with the size of the particles high frequencies will have the desired, or undesired, effect on sand and lower frequencies will have this effect on boulders . Examples If there is a dynamic coefficient of friction between two objects of 0.20, and vibration causes them to be in contact only half of the time, that would be equivalent to a constant coefficient of friction of 0.10. Lubricity is the measure of the reduction in friction of a lubricant . The study of lubrication and mechanism wear is called tribology . Measurement of lubricity Lubricity of a material cannot be directly measured, so tests are performed to quantify a lubricant s performance. This is done by determining how much wear is caused to a surface by a given friction inducing object in a given amount of time. Other factors such as surface size, temperature, and pressure are also specified. The greater the wear scar the worse the lubricity. For this reason lubricity is also termed a substance s anti wear property . Examples of test setups include Ball on cylinder and Ball on three discs tests. Lubricity in diesel engines In a modern diesel engine , the fuel is part of the engine lubrication process. Diesel fuel naturally contains sulfur compounds that provide good lubricity, but because of regulations in many countries such as the Ultra low sulfur diesel North America US and the European emission standards EU sulphur must be removed. Reformulated diesel fuel that does not have biodiesel added has a lower lubricity and requires lubricity improving additives to prevent excessive engine wear. ref Reformulated Diesel Fuels and Fuel Injection Equipment Author Hugh C. Orphan date February 2009 Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Micro pitting is a fatigue material fatigue failure of the surface of a material commonly seen in rolling Bearing mechanical bearings and gears . It is also known as grey staining , micro spalling or frosting . Pitting and micropitting The difference between pitting corrosion and micropitting is the size of the pits after surface material fatigue fatigue . Pits formed by micropitting are approximately 10 20 m in depth, and micropitted metal often has a frosted or gray appearance. Normal pitting creates larger and more visible pits. Micropits are originated from the local contact of Asperity material science asperities produced by improper lubrication . Causes In a normal bearing mechanical bearing the surfaces are separated by a layer of lubricant oil , this is known as elastohydrodynamic EHD lubrication . If the thickness of the EHD film is of the same order of magnitude as the surface surface roughness roughness , the surface topography is able to interact and cause micro pitting. A thin EHD film may be caused by excess load or temperature, a lower oil viscosity than is required, low speed or water in the oil. Water in the oil can make micro pitting worse by causing hydrogen embrittlement of the surface. Micro pitting occurs only under poor EHD lubrication conditions. A surface with a deep scratch my break exactly at the scratch if stress is ablied. One can imagine that the surface roughness is a composite of many very small scratches. So high surface roughness decreases the stability on heavy stressed parts. To get a good overview of the surface an areal scan Surface metrology gives more information that a measurment along a single profile profileometer . To quantify the surface roughness the ISO 25178 can be used. Green Gas is a popular propellant in the Airsoft community, but limited availability of the product has led many Airsoft players to create their own derivatives using retail propane and silicone oil The mixture is then administered using specially made propane adapters . Product names of Green Gas typically vary from Green Gas to Ultra Blow Back Gas or similar, though they are all inherently the same type of Green Gas propellent. Propane adapter As most Airsoft players have noted that propane and silicone oil constitutes the majority of Green Gas propellant, manufacturers have produced adapters that attach to propane tanks that are available at many retail stores, usually including reservoirs to store lubricant usually silicone oil . The propane option has become popular in that the solution is cheaper in the long run than Green Gas, as well as being more widely available compared to Green Gas. Experienced players have noted that with the propane option, however, lubrication quantities should be noted in different temperatures as decreased lubrication in propellant is detrimental to the highly sensitive mechanisms of gas Airsoft weapons. Refimprove date September 2008 The o ring chain is a specialized type of roller chain used in the transmission of mechanical power from one sprocket to another. Construction The o ring Roller chain chain is named for the rubber o ring s built into the space between the outside link plate and the inside roller link plates. Chain manufacturers began to include this feature in 1971 after the application was invented by Joseph Montano while working for Whitney Chain of Hartford, Connecticut. O rings were included as a way to improve lubrication to the links of power transmission chains, a service that is vitally important to extending their working life. These rubber fixtures form a barrier that holds factory applied lubricating grease lubricant grease inside of the pin and bushing wear areas. Further, the rubber o rings prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the inside of the chain linkages, where such particles would otherwise cause significant wear. Applications O ring chains are most notably used in motorcycle s, one of the most demanding applications for a metal chain. High revolutions per minute rpm and heavy loads require bulky chains, but such engineering increases the effect of friction compared to lighter chains. So lubrication plays a vital role here, but the high rpm also make it very difficult to keep lubrication inside and on the chain. Additionally, motorcycle chains are exposed to a large volume of contaminants and particles and must be protected. O rings, as described above, fit this application perfectly. Oil pressure is an important factor in the longevity of most internal combustion engine s. With a forced lubrication system invented by Frederick Lanchester , oil is picked up by a positive displacement oil pump and forced through oil galleries passageways into Bearing mechanical bearings , such as the main bearing s, big end s and camshaft bearings. Other components such as cam lobes and cylinder walls are lubricated by oil jets. Sufficient oil pressure ensures that the metal of the rotating shaft journal and the bearing shell can never touch, and wear is therefore confined to initial start up and shutdown. The oil pressure, combined with the rotation of the shaft, also hydrodynamically centers the journal in its shell and cools the bearings. Such a bearing is known as a fluid bearing. Oil pressure is higher when the engine is cold due to the increased viscosity of the oil, and also increases with engine speed until the relief valve opens to divert excess flow. Oil pressure is lowest under hot idling conditions, and the minimum pressure allowed by the manufacturer s tolerances is usually given at this point. Excessive oil pressure may indicate a blocked filter, blocked oil gallery or the wrong grade of oil. Low oil pressure indicates worn bearings on the crank shaft or a broken oil pump.
