  1. Lucius Aelius Stilo Praeconinus

Lucius Aelius Stilo Praeconinus ca. 154 74 BC , of Lanuvium , is the earliest philologist of the Roman Republic . He came from a distinguished family and belonged to the equestrian order . He was called Stilo Latin stylus , pen , because he wrote speeches for others, and Praeconinus from his father s profession praeco , announcer, public crier, herald . His optimate aristocratic sympathies were so strong that he voluntarily accompanied Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus into exile. At Rome he divided his time between teaching although not as a professional schoolmaster and literary work. His most famous pupils were Marcus Terentius Varro Varro and Cicero , and amongst his friends were Coelius Antipater , the historian, and Gaius Lucilius Lucilius , the satirist, who dedicated their works to him. According to Cicero, who expresses a poor opinion of his powers as an orator, Stilo was a follower of the Stoicism Stoic school . Only a few fragments of his works remain. He wrote Commentary philology commentaries on the hymns of the Salii Carmen Saliare , and probably also on the Twelve Tables . He analyzed the authenticity of Roman comedy comedies supposedly by Plautus , and recognized 25 as canonical, four more than were allowed by Varro. 1. Aelius Donatus

Aelius Donatus fl. mid 4th century was a Ancient Rome Roman Philologist grammarian and teacher of rhetoric . The only fact known regarding his life is that he was the tutor of St. Jerome . He was the author of a number of professional works, of which several are still extant A partly incomplete commentary on the playwright Terence compiled from other commentaries, but probably not in its original form His Life of Virgil is thought to be based on a lost Vita by Suetonius minor works Suetonius , together with the preface and introduction of his commentary on Virgil s works. A greatly expanded version of Servius commentary exists, however, which is supplemented with frequent and extensive extracts from what is thought to be Donatus commentary on Virgil. His Ars grammatica , especially the section on the eight lexical category parts of speech , though possessing little claim to originality, and evidently based on the same authorities which were used by the grammarians Charisius and Diomedes Grammaticus Diomedes , attained such popularity as a schoolbook that, in the Middle Ages , he became the eponym for a rudimentary treatise of any sort, called a donet . 1. Aelius Catus

Orphan date February 2009 Aelius Catus was a Roman commander near the Danube who, according to Strabo s geography, transplanted 50,000 Getae from what is now Muntenia in Romania far to the south of Danube, in Moesia . The Roman Empire had reached the Danube as early as 14 AD , when the commander Aelius Catus conducted an expedition beyond the river in order to keep away the restless Dacians and their new allies, the Sarmatians . But the Roman legion legions deployed their troops only up to Durostorum , as modern northern Dobruja was left to the forces of the kings of the Sapaei , the allies of the Romans, helped by the forces commanded by a Praefectus orae maritimae commander of the seashore . sfn Capidava cIMeC There has been some debate both on the identity of Aelius Catus and on the date of this action. He was a son of Zeuxidemus, and a pupil of Adrianus , Julius Pollux Pollux , and Zeno . In his orations, both extempore and written, some of which are mentioned by Philostratus , Antipater was not superior to his contemporaries, but in the art of writing letters he is said to have excelled all others, and for this reason the emperor Severus made him his private secretary and tutor of his two sons Caracalla and Publius Septimius Geta Geta . This emperor adlected him to the consular rank in his early 50s by Septimius Severus and sent him to govern Bithynia and Pontus but, as Antipater used his sword too freely, he was deprived of his office, and retired to his native place, where he died at the age of 68, it is said of voluntary starvation. His cognomen is derived from the Aelia gens Aelia gens . He also wrote a lost biography of Severus. ref Philostratus Vitae sophistorum ii. 24, 25. 4, 26. 3 Galen, De Theriac. ad Pison. ii. p. 458 Eudoc. p. 57. ref Sources Paul M. M. 1. Aelius Nicon

Aelius Nicon was a Ancient Greeks Greek architect and builder in 2nd century CE Pergamon . Nicon is known chiefly as the father of the ancient anatomist and philosopher, Galen . Nicon was a mathematician, architect, astronomer, philosopher, and devotee of Greek literature. Nicon closely supervised Galen s education and tutored him at home, intending his son to study philosophy or politics. However according to Galen, Nicon was visited in a dream by Asclepius , Greek gods Greek god of healing, who told to him to allow his son to study medicine. Galen soon began his studies at the major sanctuary of Asclepius located in Pergamon. In his book, On the Passions and Errors of the Soul , Galen says that his father s training lay chiefly in the sciences of geometry, arithmetic, architecture, and astronomy. He also describes his temperament But I did enjoy the good fortune of having the least irascible, the most just, the most devoted, and kindest of fathers. My mother, however, was so very prone to anger that sometimes she bit her handmaids she constantly shrieked at my father and fought with him more than Xanthippe did with Socrates. When I compared my father s noble deeds with the disgraceful passions of my mother, I decided to embrace and love his deeds and to flee and hate her passions. Just as in these respects I saw the utter difference between my parents, so also did I see it in the fact that my father seemed never to be grieved over any loss, whereas my mother was vexed over the smallest things. ref cite book last Galen title The diagnosis and cure of the soul s passions url http www.ldysinger.com texts 0198 galen 03 passions.htm ref Sources http www.medicinaantiqua.org.uk bio gal.html Galen a Biographical Sketch http www.pbs.org wnet redgold printable p galen.html Innovators & Pioneers Galen Notes Reflist Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata .
