Etymology The area was named after Raden Mas Ayu Radin Mas Ayu , a princess of the Java nese Royal Court. Her name literally translates to Princess of Golden Beauty . History Kampong Radin Mas was a small Malays in Singapore Malay village situated on the foothills of Mount Faber in Telok Blangah . According to legend, Radin Mas Ayu was a young and very beautiful princess. After her mother was murdered, she fled Java for Singapore together with her father, the crown prince, to avoid persecution at the hands of her uncle, the sultan. The area that was named after her was where her home was located when she first landed in Singapore. She was buried near her first home at Telok Blangah . The tomb and a shrine, locally known as Makam Puteri Radin Mas , still stands today at Mount Faber Road, near the junction with Telok Blangah Road. There was an old village mosque nearby that also bore her name. It was however removed in 2001 to extend the road going up to Mount Faber. Radin Mas came to be of prominence during 2007 s National Day Rally when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called it as the model of Singapore by 2020 when the proportion of Singaporeans above 65 years of age is expected to be 1 in 6. Career Felix Mas was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1935. He studied art at Saint Jordi and joined the military, where he stayed until 1957. After leaving the military he joined the Spanish art agency Seleciones Illustrada and started working for various romance comics for companies like Fleetway and Valentine. It is performed by masequerading partygoers in a two day parade, in a call and response format lavw , with a lead female chantw l singer dancing backwards in front of the drummer on a tambou l l . Chant mas lyrics are traditionally based on gossip and scandal, and addressed the personal shortcomings of others. The Carnival has African and French roots and is otherwise known as Mas Dominik , the most original Carnival in the Caribbean. Characteristics Accompaniment for the Chant mas is provided by the lapo kabwit , a drumming band of Dominica. Lapo kabrit goat skin are the most prominent part of Dominica s instrumental tradition. Chante mas and lapo kabrit is participitory music, with the band leader singing a verse and the audience responding.
