Refimprove date December 2009 A MIDI mockup is an extensive demo music demo of a recording project built using sampler musical instrument samplers to stand in for acoustic instruments. These extensive demos are frequently used in projects requiring large budgets to record, such as film score s. A MIDI mockup allows the director, or executive producer, to hear the compositions in a setting that approximates their final version, and thus to approve or alter the project before the budget has been committed to record the actual instruments. MIDI mockups first came into wide use in the 1980s, when synthesizer and sampler technology developed to the point where it could create approximate replicas of acoustic instruments. Large film scoring studios would build systems with dozens of sound module s, all linked to a single music sequencer sequencer that would play back the MIDI version of the score. With the development of faster computers, and better software environments for sampling and MIDI editing, most MIDI mockups today are done with software synthesizer s. The replication of acoustic instruments has progressed steadily, to the point where MIDI mockups are occasionally included in the final score on films where time or money has run out MIDI mockup in the past relied upon hardware ROM samplers which stored the audio content. The audio content within ROM samplers consists of audio samples which were rather short in nature to save space. Because of that limitation, longer notes were usually looped to allow the composer access to unlimited note lengths. The caveat of this scheme was that the loop point by nature created an artifact which reduced mockup realism. This has since been remedied in later generation sample libraries by the introduction of more advanced algorithms that find ... is released, a sample tail will sound led dramatically to improved realism in MIDI mockup cues. MIDI time code MTC , or MIDI time division , embeds the same timing information as standard SMPTE timecode as a series of small quarter frame MIDI messages. There is no provision for the user bits in the standard MIDI time code messages, and SysEx messages are used to carry this information instead. The quarter frame messages are transmitted in a sequence of eight messages, thus a complete timecode value is specified every two frames. If the MIDI data stream is running close to capacity, the MTC data may arrive a little behind schedule which has the effect of introducing a small amount of jitter. In order to avoid this it is ideal to use a completely separate MIDI port for MTC data. Larger full frame messages, which encapsulate a frame worth of timecode in a single message, are used to locate to a time while timecode is not running. General MIDI The General MIDI GM and General MIDI Level 2 General MIDI 2 GM2 standards define a MIDI instrument s response to the receipt of a defined set of MIDI messages. As such, they allow a given, conformant MIDI stream to be played on any conformant instrument. Although dependent on the basic MIDI 1.0 ... safe to assume that any given MIDI message stream or MIDI file is intended to drive GM compliant or GM2 compliant MIDI instruments. At heart, these specifications resolve certain ambiguities in the MIDI message protocol. In MIDI, instruments one per channel are selected by number 0 127 , using the Program Change message. However, the basic MIDI 1.0 specification did not specify what instrument sound piano, tuba, etc. corresponds to each number. This was intentional, as MIDI originated as a professional ... more details
MIDI beat clock also known as MIDI timing clock or simply MIDI clock is a clock signal that is broadcast via MIDI to ensure that several MIDI enabled devices such as a synthesizer or music sequencer stay in synchronization. It is not MIDI timecode . Unlike MIDI timecode, the MIDI beat clock is tempo dependent. Clock events are sent at a rate of 24 ppqn pulses per quarter note . Those pulses are used to maintain a synchronized tempo for synthesizers that have Beats per minute BPM dependent voices and also for arpeggiator synchronization. It does not transmit any location information bar number or time code and so must be used in conjunction with a positional reference such as timecode for complete sync. Because of limitations in MIDI and synthesizers, devices driven by MIDI beatclock are often subject to clock drift . For this reason, it is a common practice on equipment that supports another clock source such as ADAT or wordclock to use both that source and MIDI beatclock. MIDI beat clock defines the following real time messages clock decimal 248, hex 0xF8 start decimal 250, hex 0xFA continue decimal 251, hex 0xFB stop decimal 252, hex 0xFC See also word clock MIDI timecode DIN sync External links http www.motu.com techsupport technotes document.2000 01 03.5940408679 MOTU describes MIDI beat clock http www.midiclock.com Free software to send a midiclock beat signal http nic nac project.org rocket midi midiclockdetect Free software to measure a midiclock beat signal http www.cycling74.com docs max5 refpages msp ref sync .html MAX MSP documentation to their sync object http home.roadrunner.com jgglatt tech midispec.htm MIDI specification http www.midi.org techspecs midimessages.php Summary of MIDI messages Category Encodings Category MIDI standards Category MIDI Category Synchronization ... more details
