It is essentially a MOS Technology 6502 6502 chip in a smaller, cheaper 28 pin package. To do this, A15 to A13 and some other signals such as the interrupt lines are not accessible. As a result, it can only address 8 kilobyte KB of memory, which at the time 1975 was not considered restrictive. File Atari 2600 Console.jpg thumb right 250px The Atari 2600 The 6507 and 6502 chips use the same underlying silicon layers, and differ only in the final metallisation layer. This ties the interrupt lines to their inactive level so that they are not vulnerable to generating spurious interrupts from stray noise. The chip was designed by Al Charpentier in 1977 but Commodore could not find a market for the chip. In 1979 MOS Technology began work on a Video Display Controller video chip named MOS Technology 6564 intended for the TOI computer and had also made some work on another chip, MOS 6562 intended for a color version of the Commodore PET . Both of these chips failed due to memory timing constraints both required very fast and thus expensive SRAM, making them unsuitable for mass production . 1. MOS Technology 8502

Image MOS 8502R0 3686 top.jpg thumb MOS 8502 Microprocessor The MOS Technology 8502 was an 8 bit microprocessor designed by MOS Technology and used in the Commodore 128 . Based on the MOS Technology 6510 MOS 6510 that was used in the Commodore 64 , the 8502 added the ability to run at a double 2.048 Megahertz MHz clock rate, in addition to the standard 1.024 MHz rate used by the Commodore 64. Since the 40 column MOS Technology VIC II VIC II Graphics processing unit display chip could not steal sufficient cycles when the CPU ran at double speed, video display in fast mode was available only with the 80 column MOS Technology VDC VDC unlike the VIC, which shares memory with the CPU, the VDC has its own dedicated video RAM in the C128 . Some 40 column applications selectively disabled the screen when performing CPU intensive calculations so that the additional speed could be utilized when the loss of video output was unimportant. A smaller speed gain, about 35 , was also possible while keeping the 40 column display active, by switching to 2MHz only while the VIC II is drawing the vertical screen border, since no RAM access by the VIC is needed during that time. The pinout is a little bit different from the 6510. The 8502 has an extra I O pin the built in I O port mapped to addresses 0 and 1 is extended from 6 to 7 bits and lacks the 2 pin that the 6510 had. 1. MOS Technology 6551

The 6551 Asynchronous Communications Interface Adapter ACIA was an integrated circuit made by MOS Technology . It served as a companion UART chip for the widely popular MOS Technology 6502 6502 microprocessor . Intended to implement RS 232 , its specifications called for a maximum speed of 19,200 bits per second . It was used in the Commodore PET , Commodore Plus 4 , Apple Computer s Apple II serial cards Super Serial Card for the Apple II family , and possibly other lesser known computers. Commodore International omitted the 6551 from the popular Commodore VIC 20 VIC 20 , Commodore 64 C64 , and Commodore 128 C128 home computer s. Instead, these systems implemented a bit banging UART via KERNAL routines. This RS 232 implementation was not reliable over 1200 bit s see errata comments in the 6526 article , forcing some programmers of terminal program s to write carefully calibrated custom serial routines. The popular terminal program NovaTerm was able to achieve 4800 bit s on the C64, and DesTerm achieved 9600 bit s on the C128. Several other terminal programs achieved 2400 bit s. Novaterm 9.6 on a Commodore 64 or 128, can achieve a maximum rate of 9600 bit s on the user port, using an EZ 232 interface, designed by Jim Brain. Several companies, including Dr. Evil Labs and Creative Micro Designs , marketed an add on cartridge electronics cartridge containing a 6551 and an industry standard RS 232 port to allow the C64 and 128 to use high speed modems from companies such as U.S. Robotics and Hayes Communications . The Dr. Evil and CMD cartridges pushed the 6551 to a maximum speed of 38,400, and with a faster still clock crystal, some end users reported getting 115,200 bit s out of the chip. The ADTPro file transfer program turns off the baud rate generator in the 6551 allowing 115,200 bit s transfers with an unmodified clock crystal. 1. MOS Technology 8563

The 8563 Video Display Controller VDC was an integrated circuit produced by MOS Technology . It was used in the Commodore 128 computer to generate an 80 column 640 200 pixel RGB video display. The DCR models as well as a few D models of the C128 used the later and more technically advanced MOS Technology 8568 8568 D VDC controller. History and characteristics Image SpeedScript 128 in action.png thumb right 320px The VDC was designed with office suite applications in mind. Shown here is SpeedScript SpeedScript 128 , a word processor . Image Ultra Hi Res Cube Demo.gif thumb right 320px This Ultra Hi Res demo computer programming demo showcases the VDC s blitter capabilities with a simple 3D animation of a wire frame model of a cube . Originally intended for a planned but unreleased Unix UNIX based business computer, Commodore International Commodore designed the VDC into several prototype machines. Of these, only the Commodore 128 ever saw production. Unlike earlier MOS video chips such as the popular MOS Technology VIC II VIC II , the VDC had dedicated video RAM , 16 kilobyte s upgradable to 64 kilobytes in the original or flat Commodore 128 C128 and 64 kilobytes in the Commodore 128 Commodore 128D C128DCR . This RAM was not directly accessible by the microprocessor . The 8563 was more difficult to produce than most of the rest of the MOS Technology line, and initial Semiconductor fabrication yields were very low. http www.commodore.ca products 128 Commodore 128.htm Also, there were timing issues with the VDC that would cause indirect load and store operations on its registers ... literature by MOS Technology that was given to the early Commodore 128 C128 developers did indicate ... a type in program written in MOS Technology 8502 8502 assembly language that extended BASIC 7.0 ... listing and description MOS Video Sound Category Graphics chips Category Commodore 64 de MOS Technology VDC it MOS VDC pl MOS Technology 8563 ...   more details
