There are three types of MPLS VPNs deployed in networks today ref name test http www.westmonroepartners.com media Files White 20Papers Smart 20Grid 20Network 20MPLS 20Design 20Approach West 20Monroe 20Partners.ashx MPLS Design Approach ref Point to point Pseudowire Layer 2 VPLS Layer 3 VPRN Point to point pseudowire Point to point MPLS VPNs employ VLLs virtual leased lines for providing Layer2 point to point connectivity between two sites. Ethernet, TDM, and ATM frames can be encapsulated within these VLLs. Some examples of how point to point VPNs might be used by utilities include encapsulating TDM T1 circuits attached to RTUs or forwarding non routed DNP3 traffic across the backbone network to the SCADA master controller. Layer 2 VPN VPLS Layer 2 L2 , or VPLS virtual private LAN service , offers a switch in the cloud style VPLS service. VPLS provides the ability to span VLANs between sites. 1. Layer 2 MPLS VPN

Unreferenced date October 2008 A Layer 2 MPLS VPN is a term in computer networking . It is a method that Internet service providers use to segregate their network for their customers, to allow them to transmit data over an IP network . This is often sold as a service to businesses. Layer 2 VPNs are a type of Virtual Private Network VPN that uses Multiprotocol Label Switching MPLS labels to transport data. The communication occurs between Router computing routers that are known as Provider Edge routers PEs , as they sit on the edge of the provider s network, next to the customer s network. Internet providers who have an existing Layer 2 network such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode ATM or Frame Relay may choose to use these VPNs instead of the other common MPLS VPN, Network Layer Layer 3 . There is no one IETF standard for Layer 2 MPLS VPNs. Instead, two methodologies may be used. Both methods use MPLS Headers to Encapsulation networking encapsulate data. However, they differ in the way they transport data. Types of Layer 2 MPLS VPNs BGP based The BGP based type is based on a draft specification by Kireeti Kompella , from Juniper Networks . It uses the Border Gateway Protocol BGP as the mechanism for PE routers to communicate with each other about their customer connections. Each router connects to a central cloud, using BGP. This means that when new customers are added usually to new routers , the existing routers will communicate with each other, via BGP, and automatically add the new customers to the service. LDP based The second type is based on a draft specification by Luca Martini from Cisco Systems . This method is also known as a Layer 2 circuit . It uses the Label Distribution Protocol LDP to communicate between PE routers. In this case, every router will connect to every other router in the VPN, which differs from the BGP based methodology. 1. VoIP VPN

unreferenced date May 2010 A VoIP VPN combines voice over IP and virtual private network technologies to offer a method for delivering secure voice . Because VoIP transmits digitized voice as a stream of data, the VoIP VPN solution accomplishes voice encryption quite simply, applying standard data encryption mechanisms inherently available in the collection of protocols used to implement a Virtual private network VPN . The VoIP gateway router first converts the analog voice signal to digital form, encapsulates the digitized voice within Internet Protocol IP packets, then encrypts the digitized voice using IPsec , and finally routes the encrypted voice packets securely through a VPN tunnel. At the remote site, another VoIP router decodes the voice and converts the digital voice to an analog signal for delivery to the phone. A VoIP VPN can also run within an IP in IP tunnel or using SSL based OpenVPN . There is no encryption in former case, but traffic overhead is significantly lower in comparison with IPsec tunnel. 1. Penultimate Hop Popping

Unreferenced date December 2009 Penultimate Hop Popping PHP is a function performed by certain routers in an Multiprotocol Label Switching MPLS enabled network. It refers to the process whereby the outermost label of an MPLS tagged packet is removed by a Label Switch Router LSR before the packet is passed to an adjacent Label Edge Router LER . The process is important in a MPLS VPN Layer 3 MPLS VPN RFC2547 environment as it reduces the load on the LER. If this process didn t happen, the LER would have to perform at least 2 label lookups The outer label, identifying that the packet was destined to have its label stripped on this router. The inner label, to identify which VRF Virtual Routing Forwarding VRF instance to use for the subsequent IP routing lookup. In a large network this can result in the CPU load on the LER reaching unacceptable levels. By having PHP for an LER done on the LSRs connected to it, the load is effectively distributed among its neighbour routers. PHP functionality is achieved by the LER advertising a label with a value of 3 to its neighbours. This label is defined as implicit null and informs the neighbouring LSR s to perform PHP . IPstack Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol Version 3 is an IETF standard related to Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol L2TP that can be used as an alternative protocol to Multiprotocol Label Switching MPLS for encapsulation networking encapsulation of Multiprotocol Encapsulation multiprotocol Layer 2 communications traffic over Internet Protocol IP networks. Like L2TP, L2TPv3 provides a pseudo wire service, but scaled to fit carrier requirements. L2TPv3 can be regarded as being to MPLS what IP is to Asynchronous Transfer Mode ATM a simplified version of the same concept, with much of the goodness achieved with a fraction of the effort, at the cost of losing some technical features considered less important in the market. In the case of L2TPv3, the features lost are teletraffic engineering features considered important in MPLS. The communications protocol protocol overhead of L2TPv3 is also significantly bigger than MPLS. 1. Transparent LAN Service

Transparent LAN Service is a service from a Telephone company carrier linking together remote Ethernet networks. It is called transparent because the connected networks are viewed as one contiguous network by the customer, regardless of the deployed technology by the carrier in between. Its primary real world deployment is usually limited to corporations who 1 require remote office or back end data center connectivity at close to LAN speed, and 2 do not have in house expertise in Wide area network WAN management, as TLS is usually purchased as a fully managed service meaning the carrier chosen owns, configures, monitors, and maintains the equipment needed for the service to function . The availability of TLS service depends on the carrier s underlying network architecture. In most cases, it is only available in large metropolitan areas and office buildings, campuses, or data centers large enough to warrant the proper equipment. Transparent LAN service between two sites has been successful, but multipoint transparent LANs have been problematic due to the difference in architecture between the broadcast based Ethernet and the carrier s Point to point communication telecommunications point to point network. The VPLS a type of VPN standard was developed to resolve the problem using Internet Protocol IP and MPLS routers.
