  1. Overlapped I/O

No footnotes date March 2010 Overlapped I O is an asynchronous I O extension of the Windows API s, which was introduced in Windows NT . Utilizing overlapped I O requires passing an tt OVERLAPPED tt structure to the tt ReadFile tt , tt WriteFile tt , and other otherwise blocking API functions including tt WSASend tt tt WSARecv tt from the Winsock API. The requested operation is initiated by a function call, which returns immediately, and it is completed by the OS in the background. The caller may optionally specify a Win32 Event driven programming event Reference computer science handle to be raised when the operation completes. Alternatively, a program may receive notification of an event via an Input output completion port I O completion port , which is the preferred method of receiving notification when used in symmetric multiprocessing environments or when handling I O on a large number of files or Internet socket sockets . Overlapped I O is particularly useful for sockets and pipeline Unix pipe s. It is not well supported in Windows 9x . The Unix equivalent of overlapped I O is the POSIX asynchronous I O API AIO . 1. SQL CLR

SQL CLR or SQLCLR SQL Common Language Runtime is technology for hosting of the Microsoft .NET common language runtime engine within SQL Server. The SQLCLR allows managed code to be hosted by, and run in, the Microsoft SQL Server environment. This technology, introduced in Microsoft SQL Server 2005, allow users for example to create the following types of managed code objects in SQL Server in .NET languages such as C Sharp programming language C or VB.NET . Stored procedure s SPs which are analogous to procedures or void functions in procedural languages like VB or C, Database trigger triggers which are stored procedures that fire in response to Data Manipulation Language DML or Data Definition Language DDL events, User defined function s UDFs which are analogous to functions in procedural languages, User defined aggregate s UDAs which allow developers to create custom aggregates that act on sets of data instead of one row at a time, User defined type s UDTs that allow users to create simple or complex data types which can be serialized and deserialized within the database. The SQL CLR relies on the creation, deployment, and registration of .NET assemblies , which are physically stored in managed code dynamic load libraries DLLs . These assemblies may contain .NET namespaces, classes, functions and properties. 1. Concurrency and Coordination Runtime

Concurrency and Coordination Runtime CCR is an asynchronous programming library based on .NET Framework from Microsoft distributed with Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio MRDS . Even though it comes with MRDS, it is not limited to modelling robotic behavior but can be used to express asynchronous behavior in any application. CCR runtime includes a code Dispatcher code class that implements a Thread pool, with a fixed number of thread computing threads , all of which can execute simultaneously. Each dispatcher includes a queue called code DispatcherQueue code of delegate .NET delegates , which represent the entry point to a procedure computing procedure called work item that can be executed asynchronously. The work items are then distributed across the threads for execution. A dispatcher object also contains a generic programming generic code Port code which is a queue where the result of the asynchronous execution of a work item is put. Each work item can be associated with a code ReceiverTask code object which consumes the result for further processing. An code Arbiter code manages the code ReceiverTask code and invokes them when the result they are expecting is ready and put on the code Port code queue. In May 2010, the CCR was made available along with the entire Robotics Developer Studio in one package, for free.
