It stood 10 12 feet high, and six across the base, it toured Great Britain , North America and the West Indies as a visual and musical entertainment as well as demonstrating astronomical movements. It was first advertised for exhibition in 1733, but it is also claimed that Sir Isaac Newton , who died in 1727 checked the mechanism. Several prints survive of the microcosm including one of 1734 showing Newton and Bridges. When Henry Bridges died in 1754 he left the clock to his 3 youngest children to be sold. It is unclear when the clock left the Bridges family but it continued touring till 1775 when it vanished. The astronomical clock was found in Paris about 1919 and is now in the British Museum. When on tour, entrance was a massive 1s entrance, and souvenir pamphlets were also sold. It had 4 parts, from the top Three scenes which alternated 9 muses playing musical instruments, Orpheus in the forest, and a grove with birds flying and singing Beneath a grand arch were 2 astronomical clocks, one showing the Ptolemaic system, the other Copernican. Two planetariums, one showing the solar system, showing 10 months move in 10 minutes, Another showing Jupiter and its 4 satellites, and on the front face was a seascape with ships sailing and in the foreground, horse drawn carriages galloping and a gunpowdermill and a windmill turning, swans swimming In the pedestal was a working carpenters yard The machine played mechanical music but the organ could also be played by hand. The music was mostly new, some composed especially for it. As John R Milburn stated There were other broadly similar though less comprehensive devices in existence in the first half of the eighteenth century The importance of Bridges Microcosm , however, lies in the nature of its displays combining automated pictures to attract the multitude with educational astronomical models ... more details

Content The book opens with a description of the siege and fall of German Breslau at the very end of the Second World War . Attacking Red Army reduces many streets of the city to rubble, the remaining Germans gradually withdraw. The hopeless situation of the civilians, complicated by shelling, temperatures of minus 20 and food shortages, deteriorates still further as revenge seeking Soviet military leaders allow mass murder , rape and looting . The opening chapter of the book contains a description of the Prehistory prehistoric island settlement in the Oder River Oder whose inhabitants took part in the amber and salt trade. The next chapters, named Wrotizla , Vretslav , Presslaw , Breslau and Wroclaw , give exhaustive accounts of the ensuing periods. The authors show the impact of natural phenomena and events such as pandemic s, pogrom s, attack by the Mongols , the Hussite Wars , the struggles of the Protestant Reformation Reformation , the Thirty Years War , Prussian expansionism, the Napoleonic Wars , Nazism and Stalinism . Overview Wei was born in 252 in Jining, Shandong in the former county of Rencheng . Her father, Wei Shu , was a government official. From an early age she displayed a propensity for studying the works of Laozi and Zhuangzi , and practising Daoism Daoist methods of cultivation. At the age of 24, she was married to Liu Wen against her will by her parents and had two sons. After they grew up, she resumed her Daoist practices. At some point she became a libation pourer in the priesthood of the Way of the Celestial Master Celestial Masters sect of Daoism. According to her Shangqing hagiographer s, her devotion to Daoist cultivation so impressed a number of immortals that she received revelations from them 31 volumes of Daoist scriptures which would become the foundation of Shangqing School Shangqing Daoism. Among these was the Yellow Court Classic , which detailed a form of meditation involving the visualizations of deities within the adept s body, a practice that would become a defining feature of Shangqing. Shangqing has sometimes been described as a mystical form of Daoism, emphasizing the notion of the human body as a Macrocosm and microcosm microcosm containing universal energies, which could be actualized by ecstatic union with deities. With the emphasis on meditation, there would be much less attention paid to physiological cultivation by ingesting herb s and drug s, which had been important in earlier forms of Daoism. When Wei s disciple Yang Xi formally founded the Shangqing school, 30 years after her death, Wei was acknowledged as the first patriarch of Shangqing Daoism and, as an immortal, would be a source of continuing revelations. The sect would be centered on Mao Mountain , situated to the south of Nanjing , and would thus be also known as the Maoshan sect. From the 6th to the 10t ... more details

The Max Planck Institut f r Kernphysik MPI for Nuclear Physics or MPIK for short is a research institute in Heidelberg , Germany . The institute is one of the 80 institutes of the Max Planck Gesellschaft Max Planck Society , an independent, non profit research organization. The Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics has been founded in 1958 under the leadership of Wolfgang Gentner. Its precursor was the Institute for Physics at the MPI for Medical Research. Today, the institute s research areas are crossroads of particle physics and astrophysics astroparticle physics and many body dynamics of atoms and molecules quantum dynamics . There are five scientific divisions and several further research groups and junior groups. Scientific and technical departments as well as the administration support the researchers. The institute has about 390 employees, as well as many diploma students and scientific guests. The research field of Astroparticle Physics, represented by the divisions of Werner Hofmann and Manfred Lindner , combines questions related to macrocosm and microcosm. Unconventional methods of observation for gamma rays and neutrinos open new windows to the universe. What lies behind dark matter and dark energy is theoretically investigated. The research field of Quantum Dynamics is represented by the divisions of Klaus Blaum , Christoph Helmut Keitel Christoph Keitel and Joachim Ullrich . Using reaction microscopes, simple chemical reactions can be filmed . Storage rings and traps allow precision experiments almost under space conditions. The interaction of intense laser light with matter is investigated using quantum theoretical methods. Further research fields are cosmic dust, atmospheric physics as well as fullerenes and other carbon molecules. Scientists at the MPIK collaborate with other research groups in Europe and all over the world and are involved in numerous international collaborations, partly in a leading role.
