Magdalenian Girl is the common name for a skeleton of an early modern human dating from 13,000 to 11,000 BCE, in the Magdalenian period. The remains were discovered in 1911 in southwestern France in the Cap Blanc rock shelter. When Magdalenian Girl was acquired in 1926 for the Field Museum in Chicago , Illinois by Henry Field anthropologist Henry Field , then curator of Physical Anthropology, it was hailed as one of the most significant acquisitions the museum ever made. On the first day the precious specimen was exhibited, tens of thousands of visitors flocked to the museum to see it. It is the most complete Upper Paleolithic skeleton in North America . Unreferenced date August 2009 P rigordian is a term for several distinct but related Upper Upper Palaeolithic archaeological culture cultures which are thought by some archaeologists to represent a contiguous tradition . It existed between c.35,000 BP and c.20,000 BP. The earliest culture in the tradition is known as the Ch telperronian which produced denticulate tool s and distinctive flint knives. It is argued that this was superseded by the Gravettian with its Font Robert points and Noailles burin s. The tradition culminated in the proto Magdalenian . Critics have pointed out that no continuous sequence of P rigordian occupation has yet been found and that the tradition requires it to have co existed separately from the Aurignacian industry rather than being differing industries that existed before and afterwards. Stone Age The Azilian is a name given by archaeologist s to an archaeological industry industry of the Epipaleolithic in northern Spain and southern France . It probably dates to the period of the Aller d Oscillation around 10,000 years ago radiocarbon dating Calibration uncalibrate d and followed the Magdalenian culture. Archaeologists think the Azilian represents the tail end of the Magdalenian as the warming climate brought about changes in human behaviour in the area. The effects of melting ice sheets would have diminished the food supply and probably impoverished the previously well fed Magdalenian manufacturers. As a result, Azilian tools and art were cruder and less expansive than their Ice Age predecessors or simply different. The Cave of Niaux is located in Niaux in the Ari ge departments of France d partement of south western France . Like Lascaux it contains many prehistoric paintings of superior quality, in the case of Niaux from the Magdalenian Magdalenian period . From the very beginning of the seventeenth century the cave was of great interest for tourists, who left numerous traces on its walls. People visiting the cave did not imagine that the paintings of the Salon Noir were so old only in 1906, thanks to captain Molar and his sons who made a plan of the cave and discovered the paintings of the Salon Noir , did Niaux attracted specialists attention. In 1907 it was investigated by H. Breuill and E.Cartailhac, but the discovery of the Salon Noir paintings was only the beginning. In 1925 J. Mandeman found a gallery with some black paintings and called it Cartailhac Gallery. Later it was established that the paintings had been emerging on the cave walls during a long period between 11500 and 10500 years BC. The main entrance to the Niaux cave used for visitors is now further up the hillside than it once was. In ancient times, there would have been several lower, smaller entrances. The visits to the cave are strictly regulated in order to maintain an even temperature of 12 degrees C and thus preserve the wall drawings of bison, horses and ibex. July through September there are 11 visits per day of up to 20 people with 45 minutes between each group, including a tour in English at 12 30pm. Three visits per day the rest of the year some English tours . The caves are not lit up, visitors are handed torches, another measure to protect the paintings. Furthermore there is always the risk for one or two of the torches running out of battery during the visit, small children and anyone afraid of darkness should not go on this tour, once the tour has started there is no turning back. The period is named after La Madeleine, a cave near the river V z re in France. Period biology The Madelenian epoch was a long one, represented by numerous stations, whose contents show progress in the arts and general culture. It was characterized by a cold and dry climate, the existence of man in association with the reindeer, and the extinction of the mammoth. The use of bone and ivory for various implements, already begun in the preceding Solutrian epoch, was much increased, and the period is essentially a Bone age. The bone instruments are very varied spear points harpoon heads, borers, hooks and needles. Most remarkable is the evidence La Madeleine affords of prehistoric art. Numbers of bones, reindeer antlers and animals teeth were found, with rude pictures, carved or etched on them, of seals, fishes, reindeer, mammoths and other creatures. The best of these are a mammoth engraved on a fragment of its own ivory a dagger of reindeer antler, with handle in form of a reindeer a cave bear cut on a flat piece of schist a seal on a bears tooth a fish well drawn on a reindeer antler and a complete picture, also on reindeer antler, showing horses, an aurochs, trees, and a snake biting a mans leg. The man is naked, and this and the snake suggest a warm climate, in spite of the presence of the reindeer. The fauna of the Madelenian epoch seems, indeed, to have included tigers and other tropical species side by side with reindeer, blue foxes, Arctic hares and otherpolarcreatures. Madelenian man appears to have been of low stature, dolichocephalic, with low retreating forehead and prominent brow ridges. Early in August 2006, various paleolithic cave paintings were found during an archaeological excavation a non figurative iconographic grouping made up of smaller groups of red dots, either isolated or forming a series. Researchers have surmised that the paintings were done around 18,000 years ago. The cave also yielded an unusual set of portable art on peebles, with abstract forms that, in one case, suggested to the researchers resembled the Venus figurines found elsewhere in Palolithic contexts. It is dated at the Lower Magdalenian period. Protection concerns The cave is located next to the Sasiola Quarry, which presents a threat to the conservation of the paintings. On May 24, 2007, the Aranzadi Science Society proposed the establishment of a wide protective area around the cave. On July 17, 2007, the Basque Government adopted with United Left Spain Ezker Batua and Eusko Alkartasuna voting against a decree that established a 50 meter protective area around the rock sanctuary.
