  1. Flux quantization

Flux quantization is a quantum phenomenon in which the magnetic field is quantized in the unit of math h 2e math , also known variously as flux quanta, fluxoids, vortices or fluxon s. Flux quantization occurs in Type II superconductor s subjected to a magnetic field. Below a critical field H sub c1 sub , all magnetic flux is expulsed according to the Meissner effect and perfect diamagnetism is observed, exactly as in a Type I superconductor . Up to a second critical field value, H sub c2 sub , flux penetrates in discrete units while the bulk of the material remains superconducting. Both critical fields are temperature dependent, and tabulated values are the zero temperature extrapolation unless otherwise noted. A flux tube is a generally tube like Cylinder geometry cylindrical region of space containing a magnetic field , such that the field at the side surfaces is parallel to those surfaces. Both the cross sectional area of the tube and the field contained may vary along the length of the tube, but the magnetic flux is always constant. As used in astrophysics , a flux tube generally has a larger magnetic field and other properties that differ from the surrounding space. They are commonly found around star s, including the Sun , which has many flux tubes of around 300 km diameter. Sunspot s are also associated with larger flux tubes of 2500 km diameter. 1. Flux density

when discussing electromagnetism, and one usually encounters the magnetic flux, often denoted math ...Merge to Electromagnetic field discuss Talk Electromagnetic field Merger proposal Flux density date October 2011 refimprove date December 2011 Definition Flux is defined to be a surface integral over a vector field , the flux density is defined to be this flux per unit area. ref http www.thefreedictionary.com flux density ref When representing a vector field in terms of field line field lines , and the flux is the net number of field lines passing through a given surface, the flux density, as the flux per unit area, is a representation of the field itself, and one may find the terms field and flux density used interchangeably. Mathematical statement image Flux diagram.png thumb This illustration shows a hypothetical field, visualized with field lines, passing through a surface. The field s flux in a particular area is the total number of field lines in that area, and the flux density is the number of field lines per unit area. In the top image, the left field has a lower flux density than the right field since the left field has a lower flux number of field lines than the right field has for the same area. In the bottom image, both the left and right fields have the same flux density since the right field has twice the flux but in twice the area, so the flux per unit area is the same. The definition of flux density is somewhat complicated by the different definitions of what flux is. Usually, flux means a flow a quantity of something per unit area per unit time , and the term flux density is therefore redundant and never used however, when dealing with Field physics fields a different definition for flux is used properly, the field flux through a surface is the component of the field ... of field lines passing through that surface. The flux density is then the density of this flux that is, the rate of change of flux with respect to area or, in elementary physics, the flux through ...   more details

  1. Flux pinning

File Flux pinning.ogg thumb Flux pinning giving stiffness to Meissner effect levitation Flux pinning is the phenomenon that magnetic flux magnetic flux lines do not move become trapped, or pinned in spite of the Lorentz force acting on them inside a electric current current carrying Type II superconductor . The phenomenon cannot occur in Type I superconductor s, since these cannot be penetrated by magnetic fields Meissner effect Meissner Ochsenfeld effect . Flux pinning is only possible when there are crystallographic defect defects in the crystalline structure of the superconductor usually resulting from crystallite grain boundaries or impurities . Importance of flux pinning Flux pinning is desirable in high temperature superconductor high temperature ceramic superconductors to prevent flux creep , which can create a pseudo electrical resistance resistance and depress both critical current density and critical field. Degradation of a high temperature superconductor s properties due to flux creep is a limiting factor in the use of these superconductors. SQUID magnetometers suffer reduced precision in a certain range of applied field due to flux creep in the superconducting magnet used to bias the sample, and the maximum field strength of high temperature superconducting magnets is drastically reduced by the depression in critical field.
