Merge Stuffing box discuss Talk Stuffing box Merge discussion date January 2010 Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 A gland is a general type of stuffing box , used to seal a rotating or reciprocating shaft against a fluid. The most common example is in the head of a tap faucet where the gland is usually packed with string which has been soaked in tallow or similar grease. The gland nut allows the packing material to be compressed to form a watertight seal and prevent water leaking up the shaft when the tap is turned on. The gland at the rotating shaft of a centrifugal pump may be packed in a similar way and graphite grease used to accommodate continuous operation. The linear seal around the piston rod of a double acting steam piston is also known as a gland, particularly in marine applications. Likewise the shaft of a handpump or wind pump is sealed with a gland where the shaft exits the borehole. Other types of sealed connections without moving parts are also sometimes called glands for example, the point where an electrical flex exits a conduit is often sealed by an adjustable gland to facilitate assembly and to prevent water ingress. gallery Image Gland packing01.jpg Image Gland packing001.jpg Image Gland packing002.jpg Image Gland packing003.jpg gallery See also Compression seal fitting Labyrinth seal DEFAULTSORT Gland Category Plumbing Category Seals mechanical Mech engineering stub de Stopfbuchse eo topskatolo hu T m t persely nl Stopbuspakking ru tl Glandula ng makinarya tr Salmastra ... more details

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 The Koschevnikov gland is a gland of the honeybee . It is located near the sting shaft . The gland produces an pheromone honeybee alarm pheromone which is released when a bee stings. The pheromone contains more than 40 different compounds, including pentylacetate , butylacetate , 1 hexanol , n butanol , octanol , hexylacetate , octylacetate and 2 nonanol . These components have a low molar mass and evaporate quickly. It is the least specific of all pheromones. The alarm pheromone is released when a honey bee stings another animal to attract other bees to attack as well. The release of the alarm pheromone may entice more bees to sting at the same location. Smoking the bees can reduce the effectiveness of the pheromone. DEFAULTSORT Koschevnikov Gland Category Bees Biochem stub hu Kozsevnyikov mirigy pl Gruczo Ko ewnikowa ... more details

The suprapedal gland or mucous pedal gland is an anatomical feature found in some snail s and slug s. It is a gland located inside the front end of the foot of gastropod s. ref name Barker Barker G. The gland opens on the front end of the sole foot sole , on the ventral side of the foot. ref name Barker The mucus produced by this gland becomes a thin layer covering the sole of the foot, and this helps the gastropod in Animal locomotion moving . ref name Barker There are gland cell s in the suprapedal gland. For example in the suprapedal gland of the land snail Pomatias elegans there are three types of gland cells cells producing mucoprotein s, cells producing protein s and cells producing sulphated mucopolysaccharides . ref Shirbhate R. & Cook A. 1987 .
