The book concludes that land economics land rent grows as population increases. It also clearly lays out the theory of comparative advantage , which shows that all nations can benefit from free trade , even if a nation lacks an absolute advantage in all sectors of its economy. Ricardo claims in the preface that Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de Laune Turgot , Stuart, Adam Smith , Jean Baptiste Say , Sismondi , and others had not written enough satisfactory information on the topics of rent, profit, and wages. Principles of PoliticalEconomy is ostensibly Ricardo s effort to fill that gap in the literature. Principles of PoliticalEconomy 1820 was a successful book by Thomas Malthus 1766 1834 . The last chapter of the book was devoted to rebutting Say s law , and argued that the economy could stagnate with a lack of effectual demand . In other words, wages if less than the total costs of production cannot purchase the total output of industry and that this would cause prices to fall. Price falls cause incentives to invest, and the spiral could continue indefinitely. The book is mainly an analysis of capitalism , achieved by critiquing the writings of the leading theoretical exponents of capitalism at that time these were the Politicaleconomypolitical economists , nowadays often referred to as the Classical economics classical economists Adam Smith 1723 90 and David Ricardo 1772 1823 are the foremost representatives of the genre. Much of the Critique was later incorporated by Marx into his magnum opus, Capital Volume I , published in 1867 and the Critique is generally considered to be of secondary importance among Marx s writings. This does not apply, however, to the Preface of the Critique . It contains the first connected account of one of Marx s main theories the Historical materialism economic interpretation of history .
